reverse gear prob for my e60

hi all,

i jus got my used 525i ('08 model). got tis problem now, but guess its bcos i may be unsure to operate a bmw features yet.

first 3 days when parking e car, shifted into REVERSE gear, then opened my driver door, n reverse into e lot. no prob!

but since las nite, after i shifted into R gear, then opened driver door, car moved abit backwards, n gearbox jumped into PARK position. tried a few times, same scenario. e car jus wont allow me to reverse w my door open.

tis mrng, wifey drove then tried to park, she aso couldnt adopt e "open door while reversing" method. but another hour ago, she told me can "open door n reverse" alr.

hope brothers here can advise wat's happening.... i believe it is some safety features tat we accidentally activated.

Try opening the door while car is already reversing versus stationery position, then opening door, followed By shifting into reverse gear while door is open. See if it yields same results

I believe its a safety feature. You can't reverse and open the door at the same time. Some people have the habit of opening the door to check the car's line or how much more to back in, unfortunately, the LCI 5 has this feature.

Yes, it is a safety feature for some models, my 630 also work the same. but the 323 can open the door and reverse.

It's a safety feature. I am also on E60 525i. Once you open the door, you will see an amber symbol in the console with a two-headed arrow. The wheels will create a 'clack clack clack' sound and gear jumps to 'P'.

Will also happen if door is not closed and you try to drive off. The car will be stopped.

:whipper: ha ha... my wife made a "big" discovery towards tis hiccups of our "new" car.

we concluded:

if u try to reverse on a "slight" slope surface, tat means got chances of rolling off at NEUTRAL, then tis "safety" feature ll kick in n auto shift into PARK gear.

but then, if u try to reverse on an almost flat ground, we can go on reversing w driver door open!
