Replica or Original Kits

Yo guys,

Definately replica body kits are cheaper but is the difference big compared to original?

I realised a few guys are selling replica kits from malaysia.

So whats the difference in materials and quality?

Of course Original BMW kits are the best. OEM stuff are normally made from PU. Replicas made Fibreglass. I could hook you up with a couple of guys in KL but I haven't bought anything from them personnally as yet.

Dun waste time on replicas!! U'll regretted it!! Either stock or original kits!! U R driving a BMW!!! Duh!!

I have always held the view that replica parts should only be used on small and/or wear & tear parts. Spoilers, paddles, emblems, ...... On big parts like body kits, you have 2 issues to contend with.

First is durability of parts. Replica kits are often made with the more brittle fibreglass, not the stronger polyurethane (PU). For instance, can the sideskirts withstand a bump against road humps? Can the front lip withstand a light knock against road curbs? I have seen replica parts showing cracks after only few months of installation.

Second is the finish of the replica parts. If you buy a replica BMW emblem or a set of paddles from Bangkok, you probably could not tell the difference, even at a close distance. But on a prominent major part like the sideskirts or rear lip, the imperfection on the replica parts are obvious. For some, you could stand few metres away and see the wavy nature of the finishing. Of course, it will be up to the spraypainter to sand and even-up the surfaces - but there is so much he can do on the rough surfaces. Something that you might regret from the $$$ savings......

So looks like gotta get the real thing.

I will be going to bangkok in Oct. A few guys seems to go MBK to buy accessories. Is the shop (R Style) reliable? What do they sell?

I can ta pau some parts back for you guys plus some tom yam!

R Style... Ugh.. That place has rubber pricing one minute say one price the next minute quote a higher price. They have lot of stuff there. Pedals, lights, trims etc. Even have bodykits for Sedans but last year when I was there they had non for Coupes.

There are actually 3 R-Style stores.
The one in MBK has most of the stuff that they carry.
They have 2 more in the vicinity, one specializes in bodykits and mirrors and the other in exhausts i think.
I was at their bodykit shop and my experience there is quite ok.
You can get better discounts for bodykits if you go to the specialized store.
The guy in charge there seems pretty sincere.
Unfortunately, I can't remember the location of the stores.
You can always go to the MBK store and ask about their other branches.

Can I buy original products like HIOP strut bars there? Is it cheaper?

Best to go with a thai friend... managed to bargain down the price by quite a bit when i asked my thai gf to haggle
