Replacing windshield wipers for a 3 Series

Hi there folks, hope all of you are well.

I wanted to ask if anyone knew where to purchase new wipers for a 3 series? I was told to check the petrol stations but all I have seen are wipers for Japanese make cars only.

And secondly, any basic tips or instructions on how to replace them myself?

Lastly, what length should I buy?

A newbie indeed :) Thanks for your help.

Hi Murray,

Welcome and enjoy the topics here.

What's your ride? E46 or E90 or E36?

It seems that for my E46 its a J clip. And the lengths are different on both sides.

Why are you changing the blades in the first place? Does it judder " Slipping over the surface making rubbing sounds" If that's the case, you might want to check whether you are using Rainx or its like.

Blades can be bought from anywhere as long as its J clip. Take out your existing ones. very easy. 5 minutes to figure and 4 seconds to remove.

Remember they are different lengths, so to be safe take out both and walk in to compare before buying...

Enjoy!

Re: Replacing windshield wipers for a 3 Series

my guess is he's looking for the E90s one. otherwise the "for jap make cars" wipers would have fit quite well. if so, i think none out there yet if not wrong...

Re: Replacing windshield wipers for a 3 Series

any chance we can just change the rubber blades instead of the whole set? bloody expensive to buy from PML... .

I used to just change the rubber for the AUDI, cost me $12 for a set vs, $70 for the wipers from premium automobile

Re: Replacing windshield wipers for a 3 Series

yes, i beleive it can easily be done

Re: Replacing windshield wipers for a 3 Series

great! hate to spend money on this kind of unnecssary things

Re: Replacing windshield wipers for a 3 Series

tell me about it!!

get the metal backed ones if you can

gotta check size though, BMW ones look like 6mm, but could be smaller, i dunno

Re: Replacing windshield wipers for a 3 Series

Hi there all, thanks for the responses.

And cheers Vegadonovan. It is an E46 and indeed does have the J clip hook you mentioned. I have as yet to figure this out myself, a guy at the station did it for me once very quickly and I just stood there...mouth agape.

Would you know what lengths to recommend for left and right? And any specific shops and brands? I have heard they sell BWM friendly blades at Shell outlets.

Lastly, I am changing blades not just due to the squeaking but I can barely see anything with all the streaking. It's been 3 years so I suspect the issue is they're worn out.

Cheers!

Re: Replacing windshield wipers for a 3 Series

E46 should be able to fit the jap ones right? try the silicone blades like Twister. i had them on my previous ride and they were good. suppose to have a warranty of 3 yrs on that stuff. got mine from Autobacs

Re: Replacing windshield wipers for a 3 Series

I went to Leong Seng and got them to change them for me... think it was S$70 for my E46.

Re: Replacing windshield wipers for a 3 Series

I take it the consensus on Rainx is that they're no good? Agree or disagree chaps?

Re: Replacing windshield wipers for a 3 Series

Quite a lot of pple feel that by applying RainX to the front windscreen, it causes juddering of your wipers and its very tough to remove the application on both ur windscreen and your wipers!

Re: Replacing windshield wipers for a 3 Series

Hi Murray,

I had juddering when I got the car preowned. I thought it could be due to the blades having problems. However, spraying the washer with additives added made it sweep cleanly and with no judder. So I got smart and change out both blades. The juddering stops. I got even smarter and used a pariah branded kind of rainex believing that since my blades are new, it should be ok..... The juddering starts again on the driver's side.... sigh...

Anyway, I got my from autobacs. I have gotten another pair from Giant as well. I can't remember the sizes. They customized it until the blades fully covered the length of the screen. Go to autobacs; I had them do it for me. about 2 bucks for installation. The frameless blades I bought them for 15 bucks per side.

Enjoy!

Re: Replacing windshield wipers for a 3 Series

I would like to borrow this thread to find out 2 things regarding wipers and windscreen, if the thread-starter doesn't mind.

1. I have been thinking of apply RainX on my front windscreen. I have applied it to my side windows, mirrors and back. I think they work great! The rain just rolls off when I drive, even at moderate speeds. I'm reading from the above threads that applying RainX on the front would cause the blades to "judder"? I would really love to have the RainX effect on the front, as a few days ago during a HEAVY downpour, my front visibility was VERY bad, while my sides were extremely clear. Any better way to have RainX and not "judder"?

2. Do you guys feel that the BMW silicon blades are not strong near the top ends? I feel that the part where the pivot holds the blades works fine, but the pressure gets lesser as it gets farther from the pivot, and thus leaves little streaks cos I guess they don't contact the windscreen as tightly as the center.

Comments, and advise, please.

Re: Replacing windshield wipers for a 3 Series

rainx works well only when u go beyond a certain speed (when i did that several cars back, think it was 80), below that its really not much diff IMO. and in a heavy downpour, u dont really want to go fast. i think set wiper to sweep faster would be a better option

Re: Replacing windshield wipers for a 3 Series

Last time on my daihatsu charade after applying rainx very good when driving along ns highway, no need to on wiper can see rain flowing upwards and sideways especially at chiong speed. But on the wiper judders a lot. So taxi uncle taught me to put a few drop of mama lemon. Works wonders.

Re: Replacing windshield wipers for a 3 Series

hahhah... the mama lemon probably wash away the RainX anyway.

I apply RainX on my front window, but only on those area not covered by the wipers. And i ahve RainX all over the rest of the windows on the car as well.

RainX is good.. Swear by it...
