Repainting the BMW

i have a general question about repainting.

everytime i ask for repainting, people will tell me not to. They will say it is better to stick to your original paint.

reason
1) the original factory paint is better
2) stick to the color on your log card else people think you have accident.

are these above 2 points really true?

need some advice becoz i placed a booking for a stratus grey BMW and i was thinking of switching to black next year. There is no black for now, i got to wait 3 more months, can't tahan so i dun mind stratus grey for now....

please advise

I know one spray shop specialising in respraying brand new e-class taxi's to 'corporate colour'. I was very impressed with the job. And I think they do them for the whole fleet, so many taxi's.

+ you get less when you sell your car. Especially when exporting. Preferred is original.

Not sure if you formally inform LTA of colour change, the log will show new colour.

The BMW factory paint sucks because it is waterbased. Aftermarket paint gives a much nicer finish. Once you respray, no matter how good the work, all you need is experience and knowledge of where to look to determine if the car has been sprayed before. They can even use a ultrasound paint depth meter to scan the car. Once you spray, it is up to the buyer to believe if the car has been in an accident before.

I've resprayed my 2 of my cars before and so far not totally satisfied with the job done so I can't recommend any workshop.

i think you should stick to the original colour....cause if I am not wrong, your car is a 6 series, cause only the 6 has the Stratus Gray colour....
so, do think twice, the 2nd values of the 6 is already not too good, so the re-painting might cause further depreciation...just my thoughts la though.....

BMW paint sucks. lots of orange peeling effect because of the use of water-based paints.... so i disagree with point 1) although i do agree with point 2)

Sometimes it's fun to have a different colour. Anyway, some cars just have to be sprayed anyway due to scratches and stone chip so might as well spray a different colour.

i just did a total respray of my car to sterling grey, process is tedious , time consuming (12 days )and at the same time, heart pain seeing the car broken into pieces.
2 of my 4 reverse sensors broken in the process.

exporters will mind if yr car colour has been changed, and will minus off perhaps $2k down the price...but to direct buyers, u juz have to convince them it didnt go thru an accident..but heck if its a respray to a better color, y not? looks new

the GREY u ordered is nice, imho...especially on a 6er

ya...the Stratus Grey colour is unique to the 6, so i think its quite ok to keep it in that colour...maybe u can supplement it or enhance it by changing ur rims or adding bodykit... drive it first la...then maybe aft 2~3 yrs, the paint work got some damage, then consider re-spraying lor...never too late to decide mah.....

If you respray the car, it's quite easy to change the car's log card to reflect the new colour.

Just go to the LTA, fill up a form and pay an admin fee and a new log card will be issued to you.

Life is short. Why stick with a colour for your car that is not your preferred colour?

I don't agree with this "drive for a few years and then re-spray to a new colour" approach. By that time, you will want to sell your car already. Want to mod, just mod it!

I think LTA now doesn't change your log card to reflect the new colour. You fill up the form and they just key it into the system leaving you feeling very unsatisfied.

u can juz do it on the onemotoring website...but one thing need the logcard (bank and personal)to have the new colour so during the sale, more believable...

My friend told me that factory cars are not spray painted, but rather goes through electro-static powder coating. He says that this process involves negatively charging the paint and positively charging the car body, and the paint is of powder form. It is a process that will achieve a very hard and even "paint job" and its a very thick layer.

In my opinion, changing color may not be a good idea as most of your car will be stripped and that can be a painful experience if the reinstallation is not done well.

Also, respray may not get you the perfect and even coat if the painter is not highly skilled. Unless one has very steady hand and movement, and getting the consistent amount of paint from the spray gun, you can see better result. I have yet to know any painter with such high skill that the work can challenge the robotic spraying used at factory to achieve very consistent coat, I would like to know such person in Singapore.

Avoid repaint if possible. Stick to original.

I tend to weigh in on the side of leaving the factory colour on. I paid some attention to friends getting theirs recouloured when I lived in KL for a few years. And guess what, somehow, it just doesn't do it. Maybe it's psychological; maybe it's more.

I read somewhere Lexus (don't shoot me - I'm not Michael Tan; nor do I play him on TV ) gives its cars 6 or 7 coats of paint plus some other poly-something coats to keep it all brite n shiney. I dunno if shops are able to deliver the kind of attention and combination of materiel that manufacturers provide.

So, unless yours came in candy stripes or brown polka dots, I think it would be cool to leave it, too.
