Remember Fuel Magnets?

I saw it on Discovery's mythbusters yesterday. They ran a car on the dyno and test several so-called fuel saving devices and magnets is one of them. Unfortunately, the test proves our skeptism on these devices. It does not improve FC at all...

Btw they also tested something very cool. They fed hydrogen directly into the intake and the car started w/o any petrol in the tank. This shows engines can run on hydrogen w/o any modification.

Re: Remember Fuel Magnets?

Yo.. thanks for sharing... lots of snake oil category products out there I guess.. :)

Re: Remember Fuel Magnets?

yeah, no brainer.

your car will run on any "explosive" substance almost, as long as its liquid

Re: Remember Fuel Magnets?

I always found that show damn cool.
Saw an episode whereby they built a "dolphin" to see if Sharks were really afraid of dolphins.

Thanks for sharing bro!

Re: Remember Fuel Magnets?

i recall manymnay years back, my JC teacher told me tat magnetic forces are caused by induction and magnetic fields... and... magnetic beds...magnetic pillows... all these uses the same theory... HOWEVER... i also learnt tat when u place the magnetic field in such a direction, it will be parralel to the Earth's magnetic field and the magnetic field will be cancelled out.. so totally no forces... hmmm.. i'm no pro at it.. but i feel stupid cuz our cars moves in different directions.. so sometimes this magnet is helping, sometimes it's not... and sometimes it opposes the flow of the petrol... hmm .....

juz my comments

Re: Remember Fuel Magnets?

always thought the magnets to be a strange phenomenon...

Re: Remember Fuel Magnets?

The article brought me totally back to earth.

Coming from the oil industry, i ever ask the question to our technology folks whether those extra additives that promote better FC, power, etc etc really works.

All of them, from asia to europe to US, gave me the same answer - engine oils are already optimised so don't waste your money on these extra additives or high end racing type of oil because it will not make any improvements to our "normal" engine. Unless you drive F1 kind of car, if not forget it.

Re: Remember Fuel Magnets?

Talking about additives, I don't think I would agree with them. Most additives are pretty much snake oil stuffs. However, some additives are known to be good. Additives are Torco's MPZ. I tried it myself and it makes the engine smoother and it revs faster. I have also tried other molybedium based additives. These additives does work as advertised as their properties are already well known and is widely used in industry (not just engine oil).

Additives like phosphorous and zinc are added inside the engine oil. However, due to the low amt, it may not be adequate for some engines, esp. old ones. Thus additional additives are needed to supplement thoe inside the oil.

Another additive is motorsilk. I have read quite abit abt this product and its using Boron CLS which is a new lubricant additive pioneered by US Department of Energy. Their aim is to find an additive that could improve engine oil's lubricantion. I don't think most of our engine oil contain this additive and its actually something thats very good. Its even more slippery than teflon.

Nano-boric acid makes motor oil more slippery

Right now, motorsilk is still based on micron size boron CLS. Hopefully, we will see additives using nano sized boron soon. Its going to greatly improve our engine's performance. Not to mention better FC.
