hello,

was wondering if anyone has used redline oil locally in their BMW M54 engine? looked at the oil specs but can't seem to find any info on whether its ACEA A3 or BMW longlife approved.

thanks

Re: Redline oil

Hi

I don't think any Redline oil is rated BMW longlife approved. This will not be important if you change out your engine oil every 10,000km or earlier.

Check out the data sheet. http://www.redlineoil.com/pdf/4.pdf

Redline are classified as Group V oil cause they use Ester base stocks. The other exotic oil IMHO would be Motul. Motul 300V range uses Double Ester. Such exotic oils have been around for a long time now and it will not harm your engine. (Exotic becuase they use Ester as their base stock. Most synthetics out there are just semi-syn using Group III oil as base).

IMHO, Castrol GC or Castrol SLX or Castrol Edge are just as good (based on what I read from Bob Is The Oil Guy: Viewing list of forums) and cheaper.

(edit).... before I forget, lots of folks I know swear by Redline transmission oil. I changed out my transmission and differential oil at PML when the car had 15,000km on the clock using BMW/Castrol oil. Next change, I will put in Redline gearbox oil.

Cheers

Re: Redline oil

i picked up 7qts of Amsoil 5w-40 over the weekend instead. read about some cars having seal swelling issues with oils using ester base stocks like redline and motul 300v.

i believe motul also has the e-tech range of oils which contain a higher PAO: ester ratio than the 300v. might give that a go for the next oil change. what do you think?

Yes, read about cars having seal swelling issues when they use ester base stocks. But the Oil Gurus in BITOG is split down the middle regarding Redline. Some love it, some rather Castrol.

Amsoil has a strong following too but generally the folks in BITOG do not like it cause it is sold in a MLM structure. Was thinking of using Amsoil in my previous car but chickened out after reading about the amount of additives it has inside......

As for the Motul E-Tech, it is overpiced for an oil using PAO. I used to put Agip HTS 5w40 and that is PAO based. 4L for S$60.... cheap cheap.

So to answer your question directly, I will not use Amsoil nor the Motul E-Tech. If it is Motul, I will go 300V. But I have been very happy with Castrol. BTW, BMW oil are OEM Castrol.

Just my 2 cents and personal preference.

this thread quite lonely... not many people like to talk abt oil here huh.... mobil1 all around?

anyway, 4L of motul e-tech's abt 70-ish, not too bad la. amsoil's $60 for 4qts, as is german castrol.... prices all abt there. i think OWS is like what, $130 for 4L? ka-ching! that's motul 300v price range.

didn't research abt the additives in amsoil...hmm, nevermind lor, just change oil sooner i guess and research more thoroughly the next time. :(

Go ahead and use the amsoil it won't hurt your car. Its just a personal "non-preference" ;)

OWS for $130/4L :yikess: ? Ester or PAO base stock or some hydrocracked group III?

info on the OWS NA/Turbo racing series of oil is sketchy at best. website just says synthetic and that's it, iirc.

redline has replied:

Louis,

Thank you for contacting Red Line Oil, in your engine the 5W30 would
be suitable or the 5W40 or 10W40 would be options. They would meet
the ACEA A3 and LL-01 requirements. The 10W40 would be a good choice
for your temperature range and engine tune.
