BEHIND THE SCENES>> RAUH WELT BEGRIFF MEET - PART 1 - MORIYA PA - Speedhunters

AY0F2060.jpg

Before the Christmas break I stopped over at Rauh Welt one night to say hello to Nakai-san and take a look at some of the latest cars he was working on. He had a lot going on back then and was putting the finishing touches to some imposing looking machines. He told be that if I wanted to see something real special I should probably come along to the first soukoukai of the year that he was organizing on the 9th of January. I immediately put the date down on my calendar as this was a day I was definitely not going to miss.
IMG_0998.jpg

Then late last week Nakai calls me up and tells me that it would probably be a good idea if I met him and the RWB crew at the Moriya Parking Area on the Joban Expressway, the place they always gather before heading out to Tsukuba Circuit in convoy. The meeting time was 11 am and there was no way I was going to be late so I probably woke up a little too early to check the traffic situation on the internet in order to make sure there were no accidents on the shuto, as this can at times turn a simple 1-hour journey into a grueling 3-hour torture.
AY0F1992.jpg

Being a long weekend all the roads were pretty deserted thankfully which meant some much welcomed smooth sailing from the C1 onto shuto number 6 and then to the Joban Expressway.
AY0F1997.jpg

As soon as I passed through the Joban toll gate at Misato I was immediately overtaken by a pink RWB beast...
AY0F2005.jpg

...and then again by this wide 964! These two guys were running together at quite some pace! I stepped on it trying to coax the Legacy's flat-6 (having a boxer 6 I somehow felt part of the RWB club LOL) to churn out its mighty 250HP in an attempt to keep up.
AY0F2008.jpg

Moriya PA is only a 10-minute drive or so from the beginning of the Joban so we were there in no time...
AY0F2015.jpg

...and thankfully some traffic slowed the Porsches a little so I could catch up and get a couple of more shots.
AY0F2017.jpg

Welcoming us at the PA was one of the biggest group of bosozoku I have ever seen! They were there waiting for all their buddies to arrive before shooting off together, like a noisy hoard of angry bees. An undercover Police Toyota Crown was sitting there, peacefully looking at them as they left the parking. They followed them out like they were escorting them or something. It never seizes to amaze me how powerless the Police are against these guys! Only in Japan as they say!
AY0F2032.jpg

Nakai-san's new personal car has just been finished, the Royal Montegobay...
AY0F2062.jpg

...sporting without a doubt the widest ass ever seen on a 993! It's as wide as Nakai has ever gone, making this thing beyond imposing from the rear!
AY0F2047.jpg

Nakai was busy that morning, trying to coordinate everyone and keep the schedule running on time. The idea was to wait for everyone until 11:30 and then head off towards Tsukuba Circuit, grab some lunch and then get busy on track from 2pm till 4pm.
AY0F2033.jpg

I was amazed at the variation of cars that came, a lot of which I had never seen before.
AY0F2088.jpg

Even a 928! Can you imagine this once it gets the RWB treatment??
AY0F2035.jpg

White on white 964, simply awesome.
IMG_1001.jpg

Look at those BBS shine under the morning sun!
IMG_0958.jpg

In about fifteen or so minutes quite a nice little group of about 25 cars had gathered with more arriving by the minute.
IMG_0970.jpg

No matter if you like the RWB style or not, you just can't help but admire each of these unique creations.
AY0F2053.jpg

This is one of two orange 964s that Nakai has recently finished. The second, called Sunburst, is a widebody race car, which you will be seeing in detail soon!
AY0F2068.jpg

The race look of this 993 made it one of the toughest cars present.
AY0F2080.jpg

RWB all the way!
IMG_0964.jpg

Despite all this mouthwatering selection...
IMG_0982.jpg

...it was without a doubt this white 930 on red SSR SP1s that did it for me, I especially liked the RS-like rear ducktail spoiler!
AY0F2095.jpg

But there wasn't enough time to continue the drooling session as Nakai-san gave the word it was time to head out.
AY0F2104.jpg

It's only a 5-minute blast up the Joban to the Yawara exit...
AY0F2128.jpg

...and then onto regular roads for the twenty or so minute drive to Tsukuba circuit.
AY0F2119.jpg

Not every day you get to see this kind of metal at junctions!
IMG_1014.jpg

I did my best to stay with the group and try to grab a few snaps at the same time!
IMG_1021.jpg

We arrived at Tsukuba fairly quickly, but you will have to wait for Part 2 to see the rest of the coverage!

Re: Rauh Welt Begriff 2010 Meetup...

Awesome machines and very good photography skills!

Re: Rauh Welt Begriff 2010 Meetup...

MOAR RWB Goodness!!!

AY0F2259.jpg

Time to pick up where I left off yesterday and head to Tsukuba for the second part of the Rauh Welt meeting. As if seeing close to thirty wide-assed Porsches run wild on the highway and regular roads wasn't enough the best had yet to come as these lovers of all things rough, and wide, were just about to let loose on track.
AY0F2843.jpg

When we arrived in the paddock there were already some other cars waiting for Nakai-san, mainly people that had made the journey from other sides of the Kanto area. Like at Moriya PA, I had never seen a lot of these cars and it wasn't until then that I really began to understand just how big of a following RWB is getting these days.
AY0F2181.jpg

How cool is this, a flat-nose 930 in matte gray. Pure race car feel but still street legal...barely!
AY0F2147.jpg

Before things got started I headed to the little restaurant in Tsukuba circuit with Nakai-san to grab a quick bite to eat. While waiting at the table with our little curry rice and niku soba tickets I just had to grab this shot! He was working on his car through the night to get it completed and his hands were in a pretty bad state.
AY0F2148.jpg

Eventually our food arrived...
AY0F2150.jpg

...and it was sucked up and consumed in a matter of minutes before getting back to the paddock.
AY0F2141.jpg

Yet another recently finished car, all ready to head out on track but not before Nakai gives it the final touch, its name "Good Hills Speed"
AY0F2167.jpg

Simple is obviously best for some. You really can't argue with the classic lines of the 911 especially fitted with a Rennsport spoiler.
AY0F2233.jpg

Can you spot the zipties?
AY0F2191.jpg

With the affordable prices of 930s these days in Japan this remains the most popular choice for those wanting the full RWB treatment. Owners, after some discussions with Nakai-san, hand their cars over and allow him to do his thing...
AY0F2154.jpg

...treating each car as a blank canvas on which to let his ideas flow onto. Customers don't even have a say on the color, Nakai takes care of that too and he has yet to find someone that has rejected his choices.
AY0F2186.jpg

The owner and driver of this 996 is a lady which explains the pink RWB strips on the sides. I wonder if there are any plans to make this a little wilder?
AY0F2213.jpg

Unlike most track day events Nakai likes to do things a little differently, keeping things as easy and as stress-free as possible for those that have entered. With most of the drivers present having on-track experience and being well behaved there is no need for long a driver's meeting, you get your number and timing gear and you are pretty much on your way. Nakai did address the drivers briefly to run through the schedule and then passed on the megaphone to Seike-san, the editor in chief of 911 Magazine who was there with his photographer covering the event for an upcoming issue.
AY0F2268.jpg

At 2 pm the first group of cars headed out and I run to the first corner to begin shooting some action.
AY0F2344.jpg

This guy was getting the tail out quite often in very smoothly controlled drifts!
AY0F2429.jpg

Nakai was so busy with keeping things organized that I only saw him head out once with the Royal Montegobay. This new car just looks too hot out on track! I can't wait to see this develop through the years just like the Stella Artois was.
AY0F2190.jpg

More ducktail perfection.
IMG_1029.jpg

But wait, let's not forget the Japanese cars! You may recall seeing this matte back S14 at last year's Tuning Powers show...
IMG_1033.jpg

...and this T78-boosted widebody BNR32 from the Skyline Owners Battle last month, both there to join in the fun.
AY0F2457.jpg

And like at all RWB and idlers gatherings Nojima-san of Nojireal was present with his AE86. He's the guy that handles the painting at Rauh Welt and is a master at getting those complex matte finishes velvety smooth!
IMG_1085.jpg

Those SSRs are just the perfect shade of dark metallic silver against that light colored body. Perfection once again!
AY0F2351.jpg

This car runs the same front bumper as fitted to the Royal Montegobay.
AY0F2172.jpg

I like big butts and I can not lie...
AY0F2298.jpg

With virtually no pause in the soukoukai I thought I'd move around the track as much as possible to get the cars from as many different angles as possible...
AY0F2151.jpg

...but every time I passed through the paddock I just couldn't help going back to some of these cars for a second closer look...
IMG_1040.jpg

...I mean how can you resist keeping away right? Another superb 930!
AY0F2752.jpg

I was going to keep the coverage of this event at two posts but I've got so much to show you still that a third one might be unavoidable. Maybe I can squeeze it in before the Tokyo Auto Salon gets going...what do you think, you all want to see more?

noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_1_012.jpg

noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_1_021.jpg

When questioned on the theme, the owner said “Because it’s a fighting car”

noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_1_001.jpg

Going to Tsukuba Circuit almost feels a bit disappointing now if I don’t see at least one widebodied Porsche with a RAUH-Welt window banner there tearing it up.
So, here’s the entire pit row filled with them.

Monday afternoon at Tsukuba was the Rauh Welt Gonzo Soukou. While most of their meetings are run at Idlers racing club events, this particular day was Rauh Welt’s own, and left the track open for the drivers to come and go as they pleased.

noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_1_003.jpg
\
The man himself, Nakai. Bed hair, dirty hands, old boots, widebody Porsche.
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_1_004.jpg

This is his new 993 democar. Keeping the Reggae theme going from his “Natty Dread” sideskirt graphics, this one is called “Royal Montegobay”
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_1_005.jpg

This kind of reminds me of those bikini model shots where the girl is on all fours facing the camera, with her arse sticking up in the air with a tiny thong on it.
Or is that just me?
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_1_006.jpg

The Bordeax has obviously been used hard since the last time I saw it.
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_1_007.jpg

The Merlot-red tsuyakeshi (matte) paint still looks clean from the back though.
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_1_008.jpg

I didn’t know Iron Man drove a Rauh Welt Porsche. Kind of suits him, if you think about it.
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_1_009.jpg

Don’t mess with a man who has an Uzi. Or a 3.8 Porsche, for that matter.
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_1_010.jpg

It was a pretty simple kind of day. Attach your numbers and head on out.
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_1_011.jpg

That’s only an 18-incher, believe it or not.

The pits were a lot of fun to walk around in. I’m not normally one of those kinds of people who enjoys cars as “art”, but it’s so much fun to see things like this that look as good as they work.
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_1_013.jpg

Oh, you noticed that AE86 in the background and wanted to see more of it?
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_1_014.jpg

Rauh Welt actually fits in pretty well with the whole Idlers Club thing. They take not being serious very seriously.
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_1_015.jpg

It doesn’t look too different in the engine bay since the last time it was on here. He’s missing that little mechanical fuel pressure gauge though.
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_1_016.jpg

The owner is a painter at Rauh Welt. That’s him there next to the garbage bin. I’ve met him at least a half-dozen times, but I can’t remember his name!
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_1_017.jpg

The interiors of some of the cars are about as ugly and functional as you can get.
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_1_018.jpg

The exteriors however are…I’ll let you fill in that blank.
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_1_019.jpg

There was also a Rough-style R32 GT-R there.
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_1_020.jpg

That’s an externally-gated T78, and it sure sounded good.

More action from out on the track!

Re: Rauh Welt Begriff 2010 Meetup...

moar! ...
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_2_001.jpg

Here’s part two of last Monday’s Rauh Welt Gonzo Soukou.
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_2_002.jpg

Being an amateur driver means you only need to put on “sponsors” that you like.
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_2_003.jpg

Nakai gave a very quick driver’s briefing before changing into his racing suit and leading everyone out onto the track.
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_2_004.jpg

I hadn’t eaten any lunch by this point, but I knew I’d be running around the track for the next three hours at least.
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_2_005.jpg

Some of the cars had F1-style center flasher brakelights installed, which are good on the track, but also look awesome on the expressway.
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_2_006.jpg

Yo dawg, we heard you like wings…
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_2_007.jpg

Here’s the traditional Rauh Welt style we’re used to seeing. Does anyone else remember the Prognoviach pursuit team from the movie “Condorman”? If you haven’t seen it, have a look on Youtube. The best part of the movie involved a group of black Porsches from the KGB, which were actually rebodied Volkswagens, chasing Michael Crawford in a jet-powered Nova Sterling kit car.
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_2_008.jpg

A more traditional silver seems to be the new popular colour with the RWB crowd.
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_2_009.jpg

How’s this for a Flachbau? Passing rego with those headlights must be impossible, so I wonder how he does it?
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_2_010.jpg

The sign says “Check your chin strap, gloves, seatbelt. Close your window!”
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_2_011.jpg

Old-school hashiriya hardware store rubber stripping being used to very good effect on the Masterpiece’s front bumper.
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_2_012.jpg

The car used to be plain white last year.
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_2_013.jpg

Love that understeer and the driver’s body-language.
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_2_014.jpg

Keep in mind this car is driven to and from the track on regular roads.
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_2_015.jpg

Max grip rear settings there.
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_2_016.jpg

Red ones go faster.
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_2_017.jpg

The final corner seemed to catch out quite a few people, but there weren’t any crashes.
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_2_018.jpg

Most of the cars looked quite solid though.
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_2_019.jpg

Almost seems like a waste to have that in primer grey. Martini white?
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_2_020.jpg

There weren’t too many major mechanical issues, and everyone seemed to have a decent amount of track time.
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_2_021.jpg

This doesn’t look too far from what a normal circuit-spec Porsche looks like.
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_2_022.jpg

This one is Rough-style all the way through.
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_2_023.jpg

Despite blending in well to the withered winter scenery, the camo paint still drew a lot of attention.
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_2_024.jpg

Gloss red might be a bit more eye catching though.
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_2_025.jpg

Or maybe matte? I’m not sure.
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_2_026.jpg

Drivers would take short breaks in the pits between their self-imposed sessions…
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_2_027.jpg

…before strapping on their helmet and heading out for another run.
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_2_028.jpg

Most of the drivers were doing solo runs spaced out from each other, which meant a constant flow of action on every part of the track.
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_2_029.jpg

There weren’t really a whole lot of spectators, but those who were there were quite keen on checking out all the cars there.
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_2_030.jpg

Sweet, sour and bitter.
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_2_031.jpg

Spending the day there reminded me how much fun Tsukuba is to drive. I’ll have to make it out there this year sometime.
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_2_032.jpg

The real Blackbird?
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_2_033.jpg

Nail it.
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_2_034.jpg

As the day wrapped up, everyone packed up their small toolboxes, changed back into regular clothes and headed home in the same cars they’d just been racing in. I think only one car was actually trailered there.
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_2_035.jpg

Take us to your leader!
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_2_036.jpg

Hey, no cheating.
noriyaro_rauh_welt_gonzo_soukou_part_2_037.jpg

Until next time!
