Rattling noise from soft-top

Does anyone have problems with an incessant rattling or creaking noise when driving the E46 cabrio? It's getting on my nerves and PML claims that it is normal.

Re: Rattling noise from soft-top

It's normal coz afterall it's an independent hydraullic operated top cover supported by some joints.
It's however, not so much heard in a roadster mainly because the top cover is smaller

Re: Rattling noise from soft-top

Thanks for your quick reply. That explains why I didn't hear it so much when I had a Z3. But is there a way to suppress it? For instance, by oiling certain crucial parts?

Re: Rattling noise from soft-top

That is the reason why i finally chose the coupe over the cabrio. Don't know about here but i've read on other forums that the dealer can apply some sort of thing (sorry, really can't remember what it is) to silence the creaking.

Re: Rattling noise from soft-top

So, sounds like something I got to live with =(

Then again, for some perverse reason, knowing that it's a problem that cannot be solved makes me feel a bit better.

Thanks, guys.

Re: Rattling noise from soft-top

No worries mate..
It's inherent in the CAB anyway...unless it's a folding hardtop like in SLK where the noise isnt supposed to be present at all....

Re: Rattling noise from soft-top

Yup it's inherent in four-seater soft-tops. You'll notice there's not a squeak when the top's down.

PML says they can apply some grease or whatnot to fix the rattles but that won't last either... no big deal lah, it's not a problem-problem :)

Re: Rattling noise from soft-top

It's not as bad as it seems when you turn on your stereo, or next best thing - drive open top. PML typically will spray silicon to reduce it, I think......someone needs to confirm that. It is no biggy as I had worst from my previous cab rides - Miata & S2K.

Re: Rattling noise from soft-top

At low speed along uneven roads, there is a continuous rattling sound from the right side that can be quite irritating. I tried spraying some silicone lubricant (which I got from Home-Fix) over the weekend but the sound is still there. Don't know whether I am spraying in the right place. Sometimes when the car is stationary, I can hear a soft rattling sound coming from the back as well. Only when I am in "D". Once I switch to "N", the sound goes away (probably because the car doesn't vibrate so much). I've removed my toolkit, emptied my boot and removed all small items from my car so that I can reduce the noice level but it's still bugging me no end. Are all these normal? I'm going mad.

Re: Rattling noise from soft-top

Normal. And some cab rattles more than others. For instance, Alvin666's 04 cab rattles more than my 02 cab. It is just not comprehensible. Live with it.

Haha bro, the first generation 2000 model SLK creaks like hell man.

Re: Rattling noise from soft-top

There is one absolute solution:

Top down and playin Linkin PArk at max.

Can't hear any creaks.

eagle
got 3 friednds with the sme model E46 cabrio... same complains la... however the guy driving the 330 claims no squeaking noises leh... Strange la. "Lubricate" often n like wat Ken said..."live with it la..." :)

Re: Rattling noise from soft-top

Yeah blast the NUMB till ear numb...get that version feat JayZ too.

Re: Rattling noise from soft-top

Dnt borther abt lubricating it, 2 later the sound will come back. No ned send to PML to fix too cos they might readjust the alignment of the softop, after tat u might have a problm when raining cos water leaks in. My rattalin sound nt so bad previously but after i add in the strut bar anti-roll bar then the sound bcome worst!! Live wif it! Nt all cars can produce tis kind of 'sound' woh, only a softop! kekeke :)

Re: Rattling noise from soft-top

The squeaking of my cab became worst on the right side after installation of V-kool. I wondered whether the slight extra layer had caused more squeaks. The "cure" for me is to lower the glass and then squeeze the rubber seals running along the top part of the window frame. Works for about one trip :)

Yes Alvin, the ARB clanging is another thing altogether :)

Re: Rattling noise from soft-top

Hey bro!

Long time no see... it seems like ages since I logged on!

Well, rattling is bo pian.

They did lubricate the top the last time I sent in and it helps... but another N-S trip at high speed its probably gonna come back.. haha.

CHeers!

Re: Rattling noise from soft-top

Even hardtop cabs like the SLK and SL have incessant creaking sounds... My SL creaks a bit when it goes over humps too... Have to live with it!
