And that's why time is not a good measure of wear and tear - its the mileage that is relavent.

Hi Tony,

usually the case but thru regular maintenance it does help the life span......but for radiator (am not too sure as how to maintain it) i think my friend's ride is some pipe leakage not exactly the radiator.......

cheers

Re: Radiator

93000 km.
I used to drive Japanese cars and they gone beyond 100k km and they do not give me this problem.

Hi TCruiser,

could it be those piping near the radiator leaking?

cheers

Do you know that operating water temp for BMW is 100 deg C? My bleeding screw hat broke & it looks like a Geiser. After a short drive, touch ur bonnet, u will know how hot the car can be.

To own BMW, u need set to ur expectation correctly. BMW behaves & drives differently from Jap. That's why it need TLC. When it hit 100k km, there are a lot parts that need to be changed. Otherwise, it will have things breakdown.

My initial respond was nvr meant to be sarcastic. It serves as a reminder that u r driving a blue propeller. Based on ur 1st post, i knew that u have set ur expectation incorrectly.

Re: Radiator

sigz... just got my radiator changed at BVO yesterday. plus change control arms, 1.5k. this christmas is going to be a very very chrispy one.

Re: Radiator

Anywhere else to change the e90 radiator that will not incur a 1.5K cost? radiator just leaked..... sigh

Yes. Take your ride down to Rodney @ R2D - Unity Centre.
He'll get you well sorted.

Contacts in the sponsor's section.

Re: Radiator

Hi all sorry for the late reply. The radiator was indeed leaking and I got it changed. 1 week later the
Coupling connecting the radiator to the hose leaked. Got it changed and about 1 week later
a coupling behind the engine leaked. So looks like I will not have any
Problem with the radiator system cos I have changed most of the parts already. Haha..

Sadly, this seems to be the fact as I have been a E46 owner for 6 years now.

At 120,000km mileage, I have had 3 separate occasions of temp problem : twice involved change in the radiator as a result of leaks and once with the pipes/water pumps.

Re: Radiator

Mine hit 75,000kms. Two leaks. One was a little plastic cap at the rear of the engine, I don't know what's that called and just recently a radiator which I got replaced @ R2D.

The BMW coolant runs at 108-110 deg C when idle, and at higher loads it goes down a little (~95-100 deg C). My Hyundai only goes up to ~87 deg C. That's almost 20 degree C difference in temperature. Certainly if you run a BMW at 90 deg C it will be more durable, but you'll also get shitty performance and emissions.
