Question on Tire Dust on the rim

Hi,

My new 5 has not reach 400KM yet, but I notice there is a lot of tire dust on the front wheels. I suspect they are front brake pad.

I'd like to find out from you whether this is normal, if it is, is there any way to reduce this?

Thanks.

I'm having the same problem on my 3er. Already 2000+km .. still lots of brake dust on all four wheels.

Re: Question on Tire Dust on the rim

its brake dust..not tire dust..lol..

its normal..if dun have then something is wrong..if dun have means:
1.u didnt drive ur car out.
2.ur brakes are not working.

Re: Question on Tire Dust on the rim

I use dustless break pads. You loose a bit of grip and have to press the pedal a bit harder, but at least the wheels look clean.

break pads? :D

There are after market brake pads that can help improves the appearance of your wheel in this department. It doesn't mean that it is dustless.. it's just the dust are more towards a greyish tone blending in with your alloy wheel, hence less noticeable.

Like what stefman has said, it is less efficient and perhaps a slotted or cross-drilled rotor may helps improve matters. Coating a non-stick layer (telfon based) of polish on your rims is another way to help reduce the unsighty appearances. Brake dust is easier to wash off or may become detached by the centrifugal force of your wheel spins.

I myself put priority in good brakes and shorter stopping distance.. so I have to live with the brake dust.

Re: Question on Tire Dust on the rim

it's the break pad dust from the break pads. it's normal. that is the original pads by bmw. don't have to worry a single thing. some people actually feel that it's better compared to the dustless break pads.
