Question: Importing rims

:) I mean self importing rims actually. Since most higher end wheels are not stocked locally, and I believe ordering through tyre shops mean higher price because they ll mark up the price, I am trying to learn how I could go about contacting overseas dealers to order a set of wheels myself eventually.

Those hiadees who have done this before, care to share what precautions and things to note so that it will not cock-up? Kam sia cock-wee in advance.

Re: Question: Importing rims

Beng,

If you are dealing with the reputable houses like iForged, HRE, or DPE, these are the issues to take note:

  • Offset - most houses will not disclose, so it is a leap of faith. But trust that they know what they are doing, cause they have done it for the US guys.
  • Tyre Pressure Valves - the location has been a problem for some manufacturers and design. Removal of the valve stem would means re-balancing with ugly weights. Remind them of Sam's and my problem.
  • BBK clearance - specify. Rotor size (the 380 mm) might not clear tyre pressure valves if wrongly located.
  • Some do not come in 0.5 sizes, for instance, either 19x9 or 19x10.
  • Get them to under-invoice the value of the wheels when they shipped.
Cheers

Re: Question: Importing rims

U not only have to pay for the freight (freight, clearance fees, docu fees etc) as well as the 7% GST. Hence like that Kenn say, under declare the rims so that the 7% GST will not be so high.

Re: Question: Importing rims

HRE has a branch in Thailand. Anyone ordered from them before? I thought its easier, and also cheaper, since they are nearer. Maybe end of year I should go bangkok n see this shop myself. Can go zharng Jui as well !

Maybe SAM can advise since he speaketh Kup Krun Krap:)

Re: Question: Importing rims

Also, quite a few reputable shops distribute manufacturers' rims such as Eissenhaus, EvoSport, GMP, Discovery Automotive etc.

Generally speaking, they are trustworthy.
And as far as payment is concerned, no credit card is accepted for such big items so u have to buy some USD and TT it over.

On a side note, if u buy Volk or Prodrive rims, it is cheaper to go thru local shops here.

Any local shops brought in HREs for customers before? Or I should go mycarforum and ask for wider audience?

Re: Question: Importing rims

The other alternative is to go through Barry. He is a a reseller for many distributors in US and UK.

I will definitely seek your help when the day comes, but it will probably only be near my car collection date. BTW u work in DHL? Opps I shouldnt ask openly:)

Re: Question: Importing rims

ABD, he doesn't work in DHL.. just that he is trying to tackle the DHL girl...no worries. Also try checking with OLL and Kent.. OLL forklift rims are quite happening...

Re: Question: Importing rims

I imported my HRE thru a guy named Ferry (from Indonesia). He was recommended by HRE in the USA. He got them sent to Sgp and all I had to do was pick them from a warehouse in Kallang...GST, etc all taken care of. Lost his e-mail add when my laptop crashed. Ctc HRE in the USA and they will give you his details.
