Query regarding mufller on E46 6 pot

Hi I have a friend who has a e46 320 6 potter. He is not in the forum and asked me to help him ask if anyone has had FK operate their exhaust and fit in aftermarket tips. Are changing the tips alone illegal? I know operated muffer is illegal but want to know how it sounds like (if you ask them to make it as quiet as possible) and if they have had problems with getting pulled over by TP or passing inspection. FK said can gaurantee that it will pass but of course I would like to hear your opinions. Does the sound of an operated muffler sound similar to Remus/Supersprint? Is it quieter? Normally operated mufflers on other cars just sound a tiny bit bassy and louder than stock exhaust.

Thanks for posting this as I am interested to know as well. I guess I haven't been getting much feedback on my post maybe because they have been discussed already and the e46 is quite old and all the mods 'have been tried and tested'. However, the reason that I still want to ask is because most of the posts are so old, like 2004, 2005, etc. There may be new information out there and shops which used to carry these products may no longer be doing it, ie Obit II.

Also, of course we all know the best is to go for a meet up and get to know people so that you'd get 1st hand info but maybe not all of us will be able to find the time. I have been sending PMs to one of the bros here and he has been so helpful but I cannot bring myself to keep bothering this kind soul as I am sure he'd be sick and tired of answering me all those questions....

So I hope that I can get some feedback from those old birds....guess it is so different from getting a new model where everyone is so enthusiastic about mods because it is a new thing to everyone. Good and bad I supposed cos there are old birds selling off parts but I am still waiting for my supersprint catback to be offered for sale for my 6 pot e46.

hi PsychoBoy (interesting nick!...), just a little feedback fm past exp:
1. tips only: legal.
2. operated: illegal, but hard to catch unless ur sound far exceeds stock loudness.
3. exhaust checking: dB level, emmission level.
if your operated exhuast can still be within sane limits of sound level, and u pass the emission test, no reason why you cannot pass the inspection, cos they dun strip/xray your exhaust, AFAIK.
Just my 2 cents...

Wow Zennie... you switch to Super sprint exhaust? how much did it cost you, and how is the exhaust so far, sound and performance wise. Jeep Chee is quoting me $900 plus for the installation. just wanna ask about to see where has the best deals. Anyway, what is E46 6 pot? I just got my car and i am new to these terms... please advise.
