proper usage of SMG gear transmission

hey bros, need some advise from experience bros with smg rides or knowledge..i've always been pondering over this question ever since i got my ride. all the long people telling me that i need to release the accelerator before engaging the gear if not the gearbox/clutch will spoil. today ah wee actually said that releasing the accelerator is not needed at all..i really dont want to spoil my gearbox/clutch so i hope if there's any experienced bros riding on smg gearbox for years would like to give me some advise..

Re: proper usage of SMG gear transmission

Releasing the accelerator will just smoothen the process.

Of course if you drive it very hard and shift hard all the time, your smg actuater valve pump might need some work done to it later as it has to work very hard to shift the gears.

Everything else boils down to standard wear and tear.. i had my clutch and valve pump recently replaced after the pump started to leak. Nothing major :)

Re: proper usage of SMG gear transmission

for my car....running the F1 paddle-shift..low down the rev range i will need to release more on the throttle as it is slower....above 4k rpm...the release is much lesser...almost not needed at 150ms. on the track....screw it....floor the throttle n let the gears hammer in...no time to look at rev range or to smoothen out the throttle....

Re: proper usage of SMG gear transmission

erm too hard to understand..haha..ok anyway the main point is it's not the smoothening of the process i want, i just want to check if it spoils the gearbox/clutch if i don't release the accelerator when i do paddleshifting or changing of gear?

no. go read ur manual. it doesnt tell u to release throttle.

Re: proper usage of SMG gear transmission

toto,he bought 2nd hand..not sure if he has the manual

Re: proper usage of SMG gear transmission

It's not necessary to ease of throttle but if u want to make the ride smoother, do it by all means. For me whether on track or not, I always ease off v lightly, RPM probably drops a tad only, no biggie. Probably explain why my clutch is still working fine. Car is already 3.5yrs and I havent changed my clutch till now..
swee2x.

Re: proper usage of SMG gear transmission

U dun need to release the throttle when shifting, at least not for me. When u r in higher rpm and shifting then lifting off slightly like Jack says may help to smoothen
the so called 'jerkiness' that inexperienced drivers get. Once youre seasoned and u know the sweet 'spot' for shifting u will find it uncessary to lift off.

On track its a different thing, just pedal to the metal and let it hit the max rpm ! toto say one ! lol

Re: proper usage of SMG gear transmission

Clutch will not spoil, they only wear. Average lifespan ard 60k to 80k

4 years in the run and i don lift off while changing gear and gearbox still in one piece. Like the rest said, u lift off when u want a more cushy ride

In conclusion, inexperience driver r jerky and seasoned one will find the G spot easily. :nehnehhh:

Re: proper usage of SMG gear transmission

hell it took me 9 hours on a track and a bruised tired body to get the hang of the smg gearbox on the m3... the other drivers in the manual m3s all had no issues...

lack of experience.. teach me please...

anyways, so it's not necessary to ease off completely? maybe tt's why my revs not high enough going into the corners...
