SINGAPORE: Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng said Senior Minister of State for Law and Home Affairs, Associate Professor Ho Peng Kee "is a very dependable and hardworking colleague".
DPM Wong says he and Assoc Prof Ho learnt from each other, and led the Home Affairs Ministry through all the major milestones.
These include the formation of the Home Team, the Nicoll Highway collapse and the 9/11 terror attacks in the United States.
In his comments Thursday on Assoc Prof Ho's retirement, DPM Wong also said Assoc Prof Ho chaired a committee to study the scourge of drug abuse in 1993 and completed the study in 1994.
The report was comprehensive and all the recommendations were accepted.
Mr Wong said Assoc Prof Ho also helped him deal with the problem of youth crime, and chaired an Inter-Ministerial Committee on Youth Crime.
The panel is today's National Committee on Youth Guidance and Rehabilitation.
Mr Wong added that Assoc Prof Ho also played a key role in all the major legislative amendments such as the Penal Code.
