Porsche Cayman - Parallel Import ok?

HI All,

want to seek some advice on behalf of a friend on purchasing a Porsche Cayman.

The waiting time from the Agent is 5 months.

Parallel Import has ex-stock of his choice. Anyone has any experience in this area? From what i understand, Juzz4Cars will be the appointed workshop.

Thanks!

Check with TripleM. He just imported a GT3 from Auto Concept.

Re: Porsche Cayman - Parallel Import ok?

When I decided to jump into PI route for P-car, my only motivation was the Cost Saving which was a decent 10 pct. Other models of P cars may get more, more options more savings.

At the same time of course, u must ensure you have your warranty stated clearly in black and white by the agent who sells you the car. Don't accept anything verbal.

The next qst u wanna ask is servicing. I dunno how good the named workshop above is when it comes to dealing P cars but I know two other shops who are definitely competent and I have patronized one of them. ( other than my own agent of course )

So I have no worries when it comes to servicing and repair and mod too!

The other thing that u might want to know is that u can hv ur car "adopted" by S.A
by paying like a few grands and they will do the servicing/repair etc for you. From what I heard, u still wont get any priority Q. I am yet to get mine done.

Re: Porsche Cayman - Parallel Import ok?

saw one @ Cybercars lat weekend and the savings is 10%.

designated workshop is at Shell workshop along havelock road.

Re: Porsche Cayman - Parallel Import ok?

I chose to get from authorised because:

1) for Cayman the price diff was only 20K.
2) paying 2K to SA just registers the car with SA, and they will handle warranty, but no goodwill, meaning that if anything spoil, you pay first, then if Porsche DE ascertain if warranty issue, then they will compensate SA and SA will compensate you (3 months delay) otherwise, you're out of pocket.
3) Mondial Warranty (special service VIP warranty) not available to people who buy from PI and pay 2K to SA ... only to authorised cars. Mondial includes free towing and hotel services and concierage services up to Malaysia (possibly Thailand).
4) Paying 2K to SA doesn't mean you get recall information, SA only responsible for recall for cars SOLD by it, paying 2K to register your car does not mean that you get recalls.

Overall, I weighed all this and did not want PI. In any case, I view some PI as opportunists who destroy value, not increase it. They feast on goodwill created by some authorised distros, and discount the value of this goodwill when they release cars for short term profit. Of course, some cars are well handled by authorised distros, some are not. So this is not a blanket statement.

Re: Porsche Cayman - Parallel Import ok?

Well this whole issue is very personal and in my honest opinion, the cost savings on a Cayman from a PI can be about $30K which is very decent and may mean a lot to some of the potential buyers .... SA service isnt all that fantastic and cost of maintenance over there is horrendous ... Have a few friends who got their rides from PI and naturally they complained of the lack of quality service even after getting their cars adopted at SA but Pockys are all bulletproof, unlike bimmers - breaking down all the time ... Hehe ... But if i have $10M sitting in my account now, i wont give a damn about cost savings obviously ....

Re: Porsche Cayman - Parallel Import ok?

i found the cost of doing things in SA about at par or less than Cycle but of course, I have to see how after more attempts. Until now oil change only .... and that's like WAAAAY before the 30-40K scheduled ...

Re: Porsche Cayman - Parallel Import ok?

Y r u comparing S.A and Cycle? All ADs definitely charge more anyway
U shud compare S.A with other shops who can handle P cars too. That is where people will take that factor into account whether to go PI or AD route.

I compared SA with Cycle as a RELATIVE indicator of affordability, to give a perspective to nautilus' statement that `cost of maintenance over there is horrendous'.

Comparing agent vs 3rd party specialist shop always gives a pleasant surprise. And whether buying from SA or PI, service costs are more or less irrelevant as SA cars can also be serviced by 3rd party specialist shops.

Just a note... the workshop at Shell Havelock belongs to them (ie. they set up that workshop specifically for their cars)

Re: Porsche Cayman - Parallel Import ok?

By the way, all new cars from SA from Nov 07 onwards comes with 4 yrs warranty + 3 yrs free servicing. They also guarrantee u a loaner car if it is indeed a warranty claim issue. Btw, when I did my 60k km major servicing with SA for my 996 C4S including autobox oil (not req, I asked for it) and autobox filter chg, air-con major servicing, chg of spark plugs + 10litres of engine oil etc cost me slightly over $2k. As compare to PML and PA (Audi, RS4 servicing)......actually I find SA cheaper.

I wont go PI unless I know my saving is going to be huge. Btw resale value btw SA and PI cars also difference by quite a bit. A 3yrs old C4S similar specs px difference is about $20-30k btw PI and SA cars during my then ex-car shopping experience.

Re: Porsche Cayman - Parallel Import ok?

I guess if you buy it cheaper with the PI route, you will have to re-sell it cheaper as well.

Re: Porsche Cayman - Parallel Import ok?

Yeah, so the 20 or 30k savings upfront can easily be halved when u sell ur car, unless the plan is to have it for 10yrs.

Re: Porsche Cayman - Parallel Import ok?

Have bros here considered trying the imported used car route? Under the new LTA ruling, dealers can bring in used cars up to 3 yrs old. However, you will still be considered the first owner in Singapore.

Anyway, I enquired with one local dealer. Can bring in a 06 997S for me with decent specs, low mileage from Japan. Asking $320k. 1 yr warranty.

Cheers,
B

Re: Porsche Cayman - Parallel Import ok?

Did he quote u the omv? There was a E93 "new used car" asking 228k nia...then the surprise came when dealer said the OMV is only 42k!!! Looks like dealer is making a killing...

Re: Porsche Cayman - Parallel Import ok?

I have come to term that there is "no free lunch". If the deal is so good, there is always a catch somewhere that will bite u back.
