CAR FEATURE>> RAUH WELT NATTY DREAD - Speedhunters

RWND-055.jpg

We are all great admirers of Nakai-san and Rauh Welt here at Speedhunters. The cars that have rolled out of this small countryside body-shop in Chiba-ken have pretty much all assumed cult status. Nakai's creations are all about raw style, a vision into what he thinks a Porsche should look, sound and even smell like! There are no compromises here, the cars that bare theRauh Welt touch have been built for one simple thing, driving.
RWND-018.jpg

I though it would be cool to take a nice and detailed look into one of the last cars Nakai-san has built, a customer car that has already done the rounds on the internet, the 993-based Natty Dread. This, like all Rauh Welt cars, is a prime example of stance...
RWND-014.jpg

...it sits so well on its deeply-dished SSRs, sporting the most aggressively widened fenders this side of a fully-fledged race car.
Nakai-01.jpg

Nakai-san is without a doubt a man of insight, he sees things clearly, and it's precisely this that has allowed him to create an unmistakable style. His customers trust him; they allow him to go wild on their pride and joy like a painter would on a bare canvas.
InterClubHCR-196.jpg

The result may shock purists, but for many others it calls for tons of respect. And rightly so, just look at the Natty Dread in its natural environment, the race track.
RWND-119.jpg

When Keiji-san, the owner of the Natty Dread, approached Nakai he wanted his 993 turned into a more focused track weapon. With the mechanical side of things already being worked on it was the exterior that needed to be given that unmistakable Rauh Welt touch.
RWND-049.jpg

The Carrera 2 was already wearing some nice parts like the Sunburst front bumper, but it was in dire need of a serious dose of widening. Nakai made up some GT-2-style front and rear overfenders, fixed into position via a series of rivets that have been left exposed for that raw touch. The same goes for the custom chunky skirts but it was the front spoiler that really impressed me the most. It is actually a thick strip of durable rubber held in place around the lower section of the front bumper with a series of self-tapping screws. It literally scrapes the ground on any incline, but thanks to its flexibility never actually chips or brakes! Genius! Twin carbon front canards are there to increase front-end bite when at speed, as much of the weight is hanging off the rear axle!
RWND-042.jpg

The Sunburst rear hood/tail is cut out to allow the air-cooled flat-six to breathe.
RWND-078.jpg

The front 10Jx18" SSR SP1 are custom painted at Rauh Welt by Nojima-san, the owner of the matte black AE86 Trueno we have seen before on Speedhunters. I really liked the satin bronze finish, kind of made them look anodized from a distance. These are joined by wider 12Jx18" at the rears and are all wrapped in Hankook Ventus TD semi-slick rubber, a brand that is becoming ever so popular in Japan.
RWND-071.jpg

Second Development? A fitting choice of words seeing how this once yellow 993 has been transformed!
RWND-079.jpg

The Rauh Welt feel is carried over in the interior which can best be described as spartan. Notice how the clocks have been slightly rotated counterclockwise, a style that I used to see on modified JDM machinery like drag cars back in the day. The deeply cupped OMP steering wheel is fitted on a snap-off Works Bell boss.
RWND-084.jpg

To boost torsional rigidity the chassis was spot welded and fitted with a custom roll-cage. Here is a view down at the pedal area where you can once again see how everything has been done to make Keiji-san feel more comfortable while driving on track.
RWND-087.jpg

Everything that was surplus to requirement was simply ripped off and thrown out, like the door cards replaced by far rawer looking carbon fiber panels. And notice the makeshift door handles made from bits of red nylon straps! Simplicity rules.
RWND-109.jpg

Check out how only the top part of the stock dashboard remains, there is no glove box, most of the center console is gone, much like the rest of the trim. The two Recaro seats, the driver one a more deeply cupped bucket, are joined by Sablet harnesses.
RWND-023.jpg

This is a nice detail, the stock side window has been replaced by an acrylic sheet bent inwards to form a perfect intake helping feed the engine. The air is taken from each side into the engine bay via those big red flexible pipes you see in the background. Also I'm guessing either Nakai-san or Keiji-san are fans of Jamaican beer!
RWND-115.jpg

View of the brake-balance-adjuster.
RWND-107.jpg

Keiji-san had Promodet, a well known Japanese Porsche tuner, take care of all the engine work on his 993, work that has been kept simple as he just loves how balanced his car feels. You can get a nice view of the Sunburst rear bumper from the above shot, with those shark-like gills on each side.
RWND-097.jpg

The air-cooled 3.6L flat-6 has been slightly tuned thanks to a full Promodet exhaust system and custom titanium intake pipe...
RWND-089.jpg

...onto which the cone filter is attached. Engine management is taken care by a Motec M48 stand-alone ECU mapped by the guys at Promodet.
RWND-113.jpg

Keiji-san runs some very serious Zeal dampers with remotely located piggy-back tanks, fixed onto the front strut brace.
RWND-022.jpg

While the 993 was in at Promodet the stock brakes were swapped out for a front and rear set of 993 RS calipers along with 2-piece drilled rotors. Clearance with the SSRs is pretty tight!
RWND-061.jpg

Nakai-san explained how he always experiments when painting cars, for example the Natty Dread has some red mixed into the matt black and the base coat is actually a silver if I recall correctly. It's hard to tell but each one of the cars really does look different under the light.
RWND-002.jpg

The rear end is so tough with that massive stacked Promodet spoiler!
RWND-044.jpg

I asked a German-speaking friend of mine if Rauh Welt (rough world) actually made sense, and it seems that "Rauh" or "rough" is more related to texture which could explain why Nakai-san paints most of his cars a matte color. Will have to ask him next time I see him.
RWND-047.jpg

I've been lucky enough to shoot tons of cool cars over the years but none have come close to matching the presence of a Rauh Welt Porsche. I'd like to thank Nakai-san for welcoming Speedhunters back to his shop once again and Keiji-san for letting me get close and personal with the Natty Dread. Trust me, this is not the last we will see from Rauh Welt!

Re: Porkgasm: Rauh Welt's Natty Dread

i cant drive a car if i cant get pass its looks.....

Re: Porkgasm: Rauh Welt's Natty Dread

Um, think I prefer the original 993 GT2.... unmolested..... this C2 has been gang-raped....

Re: Porkgasm: Rauh Welt's Natty Dread

But this is what you call hardcore isn't it?

I'm sure the owner has other cars to drive around la. This one just for tracking.

Meet Japan's RAUH-Welt

You've seen them online. Now meet the guy behind those sick, Japanese 911s.

raugh_welt_thumb.jpg

THE SHOP’S NAME MEANS ROUGH-WORLD LIFESTYLE IN GERMAN.
You’ve seen their bewilderingly hard-core tuner Porsches posted online; if you haven’t, wait five minutes (or, for a primer, check out our Rauh-Welt Mega Gallery. Not your typical bolt-on kits, these are one-of-a-kind, objets d’art that just happen to be ready for the racetrack. Conceptually, the cars suggest Teutonic racing elegance filtered through a typically Japanese, baroque pop-cultural ethos. No two are exactly alike. Find another widebody Porsche in flat black with the owner’s drink of choice on the side skirt, or graffiti on the quarter panels, or Frankenstein stitching on the flared-out fenders. Nope, not going to happen.

These are the reasons for a last-minute trip halfway around the globe to find the man who’s been turning out these extraordinary Porsches for 14 years under the trade name RAUH-Welt Begriff.

The CarsTwo Porsche 911s tuned by RAUH-Welt principal Akira Nakai slumber on a deserted street close by the shop’s headquarters in Kashiwa City, a small city surrounded by sprawling rice fields outside Tokyo in Japan’s Chiba Prefecture.

AKIRA NAKAI WAKES UP BEFORE NOON if he has to take delivery of a car; otherwise, he’ll usually sleep until the early afternoon. Often, he works late into the evening, turning in at 4 A.M. He likes the peacefulness of working alone at night.

IMG_1049-532x354.jpg

He has a bunk bed and a hammock in a small back room, lit by a green haze of sun peeking through Stella Artois bottles stacked across the window. This is where he’ll grab just a few winks before getting back to work.

rear-532x354.jpg

If the cars look haphazardly built, it’s no accident. Nakai-san doesn’t believe in perfection. “It doesn’t exist,” he says through an interpreter; “nothing is perfect. You could say RAUH really stands for the pure, rugged style each human exhibits.”

IMG_1255-532x354.jpg

THE YAMATE TUNNEL outside Tokyo is more than just a 6.8-mile subterranean route around the city; it’s an amplifier.

IMG_1232-532x354.jpg

Try to imagine the sound of two Porsche flat-sixes—one hanging a monster turbo behind the bumper, the other a naturally aspirated, fire-breathing beast spitting out unburned fuel between every shift—as every pop and burble bounces off the Yamate walls.

It’s an echo chamber of pure sonic porn. These engines are sinister devils

street-532x354.jpg

THE BORDEAUX 993 is named as much for its owner’s favorite variatal, as for its regal hue.

group-532x310.jpg

COLOR IS A BIG PART of the RAUH-Welt experience. Often it’s the first thing you notice, and Nakai-san has produced a rainbow in his personal fleet. The blue one is an original 964 RS. And it’s no trailer queen; it’s his practice car on Tsukuba. Everything Nakai-san builds is made to be driven—hard.

IMG_1109-532x354.jpg

“I MAKE MY SHOP LIKE I MAKE MY HOME,” Nakai-san says. “It’s just filled with things I like; it’s my style.” Zippo lighters, 1960s slot machines, imported beer bottles—he’s got at least five of everything.

DISTRESSED WORK BOOTS, worn-thin denim, a loose-fitting Hard Rock shirt from Memphis and a Marlboro Red burned straight to the filter—this is the uniform of an artist with an eye for awesome.

Rauh-Welt Begriff Porsches - Rough-World Concept

We Take A Look At The Legendary RWB Porsches Coming Out Of Japan.

Ever since we came across the matte-black Porsche 930 from tuner Rauh-Welt Begriff at the '09 Tokyo Auto Salon (et 7/09), we scrambled to get the story. The car became an overnight sensation online and people were hungry for information.

Judging by your emails, most of you were equally as curious but we bided our time until we could get a little more information on the company. The problem is, the reclusive owner speaks no English and hides from the spotlight. As a result, several stories have been written yet little is known.

What we do know is that the small tuning shop has a big following. It specializes in transforming older Porsche 930 and 964 models into the craziest widebody cars imaginable, reminiscent of the mid-'70s Porsche 934 prepared for Group 4 endurance GT racing.

This was perhaps the pinnacle of 911 racing, where Porsche swept all before it, winning championships worldwide. These were also the cars that encapsulated the classic coke-bottle shape of the widebody Turbo cars that became the wall posters for generations of schoolboys.

eurp_1011_02_o+rauh_welt_begriff_porsches+rauh_welt.jpg

By rekindling the menace of these GT racers, Akira Nakai has achieved cult status for himself and his company. The machines he produces are instantly recognizable for their outrageous aerodynamics and bold colors that run the gauntlet from matte-black, through pastels to the bold orange and green you see here. No two cars are exactly the same, with owner's giving each a unique personality.

Nakai-san remembers the moment he fell in love with speed. It was while watching an American movie aged 7. He saw a car tail-slide around a corner and it stirred something inside.

eurp_1011_05_o+rauh_welt_begriff_porsches+carrera_2s.jpg

Movies like the original Gone in 60 Seconds and The Cannonball Run brought images of the Eleanor Mustang and Lamborghini Countach into the young boy's head. As a result, he now sleeps in the same workshop where he creates these amazing machines, claiming that waking up to the sight of his 911 inspires him for the rest of the day.

The company was formed about 20 years ago in the building he still occupies. It's where customers become family and where he has become comfortable.

The name Rauh-Welt Begriff is German and one of those interesting Japanese contrivances that doesn't translate directly into English. However, "rauh" means "rough" and "welt" means "world". This represents the way Nakai likes to drive his Porsches, "in a rough style," according to our translator. It also reflects the world he has shaped, where he does not seek perfection in his creations.

eurp_1011_06_o+rauh_welt_begriff_porsches+ssr_wheels.jpg

Unlike most tuners, Nakai-san sees the flaws in each car as part of its character; the same way most of us view older cars, where the ritual of repairing faulty wiring or cajoling a stubborn starter motor brings you closer to the car. As a result, he builds the cars with rivets, tape and zipties, ignoring imperfections in search of the car's soul.

For clarification, "begriff" is also German and translates into "concept" or "idea". We're told Nakai-san selected it "because he liked how it sounded with Rauh-Welt," and so the Rough-World Concept was born.

eurp_1011_07_o+rauh_welt_begriff_porsches+fins.jpg

930
eurp_1011_08_o+rauh_welt_begriff_porsches+930_porsche.jpg

Even 20 years ago, Nakai preferred the older Porsche 911 models such as the legendary 930 (1974-89). So this is what he first drove and what he continues to drive today. And although the 930 was the first production car to use turbo technology, he rates the naturally-aspirated models over the legendary 911 Turbo, which established the 911 as the first modern supercar.

His own matte-black 930 in our photos has a 3.8-liter motor on carbs to retain that period feel and the need for constant maintenance. It wears RWB's own 930 Racing widebody kit, as well as RWB suspension and massive SSR wheels in the same matte-black.

Fitted with a full rollcage, racing seats and sliding windows, the interior is a web of loose wires for racing switches and gauges. With its bare floors, roof and doors, the owner could undoubtedly have created a tidier finish but wanted to remain true to his Rough World status.

eurp_1011_09_o+rauh_welt_begriff_porsches+na_engine.jpg

All RWB cars are dual-purpose; built for the street and track. "Neither is more or less important," we were told. However, his greatest inspiration is from driving on the street. "When he catches his car's reflection in a shop window, that's when he sees the car showcased."

This response caught us off guard. Conventional wisdom suggests this sort of widebody conversion is dedicated to hardcore motorsport, but Akira Nakai's honesty is disarming. He simply loves the way the cars look.

eurp_1011_11_o+rauh_welt_begriff_porsches+m_machine.jpg

In addition to his own parts, RWB also incorporates genuine Porsche parts, as well as tuning parts from the US. Nakai-san talked of his respect for the renowned European tuners such as Ruf, Gemballa, etc but doesn't appear to work with them.

964
The stunning green and orange 964 ('89-94) models in our photos are two customer cars. "I made the green Porsche for Toshiya Ichiraku," Nakai told us.

"He wanted to build a car like the latest 997 GT3 RS with his 964. And after I made that one, Mr Makabe liked it so we painted his '90 Carrera 2 in the GT3 RS orange!"

Both cars wear the Rauh-Welt 964 widebody and RWB suspension with 18'' SSR wheels. However, Toshi's green '93 Carrera 2 has race-spec dampers along with a carbon interior and gold SSR wheels - these are 18x10''front, 18x12'' rear with 265/35 and 295/35 Bridgestone tires, respectively.

Although built for the track, Toshi uses the car as a daily-driver, preferring to take his wife to dinner or pick up his kids from school in the Viper green 964. "I built it for a Hollywood movie," he confided. "I would love to see an RWB Porsche in a movie, so I made this green 911 for that. I also wanted to make the older model look cooler than the 997 GT3 RS," he explained, and we think he's succeeded with that wish...

Toshi has known Nakai-san since they raced Porsches together in 1990, and he still has an RWB 930 for the track. They became friends and Toshi is now trying to help Rauh-Welt grow.

So we asked him about the top Porsche tuners in Japan, and Toshi claimed RWB is undoubtedly best for bodywork. We also asked whether it was difficult to own a Porsche in Japan, surrounded by so many cheaper domestic options. His answer was typically and mysteriously Japanese: "It's not easy to own one of these cars, but if you are a real man, you can do it. There is no word for it in Samurai..."

Despite creating some of the coolest Euros on the planet, Nakai-san will work on other cars. Yet when he started drifting in a Toyota Corolla AE86 he painted it the same olive color as the awesome Ruf 911 BTR to maintain the Porsche connection. He lives and breathes Porsche, and is keen to expand his horizons, even offering to travel to any country where a customer wants to recreate one of his RWB Porsches. He also indicated he was particularly keen to tackle the latest 997 model.

If nothing else, Rauh-Welt Begriff proves there's plenty of life in the older, cooler 911 models. It's good to see such a huge following for these iconic sports cars, which can be bought for bargain prices right now. For more information on this incredible company, check out rauh-welt.com

Event: Idlers Games at Tsukuba Circuit Part I

Posted on June 13, 2011 by parkbaker| 2 Comments

Yesterday’s Idlers Games at Tsukuba circuit, just a short drive north of Tokyo, was the stuff of dreams for any Porsche fan. While Idlers Games is a track day that welcomes cars from a variety of different classes, it’s the presence of the countless Rauh Welt-Begriff tuned Porsches that dominate the event.

Every where you looked, there was that distinctive widebody 911 style that RWB is so famous for.

There’s definitely a unique attitude to each and every vehicle that comes out of the shop.

From walking around the paddock, you can actually start to recognize each driver’s personality in every car you see. To maintain this kind of originality, RWB will create only one car per customer.

WIDE and STACKED.

Check out that exhaust!

There were plenty of other perfect examples from a handful of other tuners and shops as well.

Idlers Club is home to a truly amazing collection of cars and drivers.

Out on the track, the noise was insane!

We’ll have continued coverage from the event coming a bit later. In part two, we’ll focus on the cars from other classes, including some cool classics, Nissan Z’s, and Eight-Six’s.

For now, be sure to check out plenty more Porsche love in our gallery
