Anyone know the reason? I hope it's not a problem because it sounds quite cute.

Tanzy i hv no idea wat cause it but mine does the same too since day one. Dont think it's a problem though. :)

Yup I get it too... I kinda like it !

Is call backfire! Sound good though! Nothing serious just that your car running a bit rich! :)

ZY, It's perfectly normal...

Imagine this...

When u r on throttle, the gas flow is constant but when u lift off, the the throttle body shuts and the back pressure will create the "void" within the exhaust system, hence u hear the pop...

Z4 especially noticable cos the exhaust is much shorter or on the higher cc car, where the exhaust volume is higher...

without being physically there to hear the exact sound, it could either be pressure induced, or it could be backfiring.

backfiring occurs when unburnt fuel travels down your exhaust pipe and is ignited along the way coz the pipe is too hot. this will further increase your exhaust temp. u could be running too rich, or something is causing incomplet combustion in your cylinders. this is an indication of a problem

for the evos, they run pretty rich from the factory, so a certain amount of backfiring is expected but not for a bmw.

Racebred,
It's not backfiring. I've heard backfiring before. It's quite sharp and loud. Best described as exhaust barking.
This exhaust sound is like low popping. A bit like 'boop...booop.. booop." Very cute sound.

As Uncle mentioned, it's inherent on all Z4 2.5 and 3.0 as confirmed by the Z4 forum. I'm just wondering why and I guess Alan-Speedmonster-who-shot-pass-me-on-PIE-after-lunch has explained it.

Welbo,
Can imagine you and your daughter sitting on the sofa suck thumb together.

Tanzy, my take is this - the exhaust gas can be felt like a series of pulses. The low pressure tail end of an exhaust pulse will most definitely attract the high-pressure bow of the following pulse, effectively "sucking" it along. The runners on a header are specifically tuned to allow our exhaust pulses to "line up" and "suck" each other along. But since engines rev at various speeds, the exhaust pulses don't always exactly line up. When you throttle up or down, you are creating inconsistent pulses, hence the popping sound.

Tanzy,

yeah... i got it too. sounds cute i agree. like farting! hee!

Arsony

Sucking thumb you know, farting you don't? Think of it as a series of farting...... if you disrupt the flow of gases, wouldn't the next burst be a louder pop?

Damn. I hate doing this. Where's my nuggets?
