Hi,

I had the opportunity to test drive the 125i coupe and i was pleasantly suprised !

Plus points :
1. 125i has a 3.0 IL6 heart and NOT a 2.5 despite the badge
2. Exhaust and engine note was sweeett !
3. Torque was available from down low and abundent in the 2,300 to 4,000 rpm range
4. ride was comfy with the M suspension, more relaxing than the 130 hatch which was rather edgy and jarring at times.
5. Possibly good resale values in the long term

Minus points :
1. Engine is detuned from the 130i hatched 270bhp/2500 vs 315/2750
2. torque is also lower at 270/2500 to 315/2750
3. Rims too small, 4 mths long wait !
4. LOW OMV of just $43k which puts it in 320i category yet it retails at $151,800 compared to the lelong price of $122-126k for the 320

Overall verdict :

I rate the 125 coupe 8.5/10, and i would actually prefer it to the 135 coupe as its definitely has more than enough power for the chasis to cope. Better handling could possibly to achieved by upgrading thicker ARBs and with aftermarket coilovers.
I felt that a stock 320 still handles much better than the 125 coupe but without a doubt, the main attraction for the 125 coupe is its sweet 3.0 IL6 engine !

Qns :

IS this the new Efficient Dynamics engine ?
Are the 3.0 engines found in the coupe and hatch the same but running on different ECU maps ?

Re: PML 125i coupe engine specs

i just keep wondering Y the dutune.....

Re: PML 125i coupe engine specs

pricing n market segmentation hence the de-tune....

IMO, i feel pricing for 1 series is funny, omv sub 40k+....yet selling price is kinda high....

Re: PML 125i coupe engine specs

nice test drive review....ClemZ.

will think the 130i hatch will be a blast to drive, like a pocket rocket.

Re: PML 125i coupe engine specs

kinda crappy a decision by BMW to detune the motor when the one found in the hatch is the same thing with more power.... pfffzzzt

i'm waiting to get my hands on the 130i hatch for a test too..hohoho

Re: PML 125i coupe engine specs

Had the chance to test drive both the 125i coupe and 130i hatchback.

The coupe definately has a nicer exhaust tune. Louder and sportier.
But performance wise, the 130i beats the 125i handsdown.
The hatch is much, much faster. Kickdown on the accelerator and power comes almost instantly
The 130i hatch also comes with M-steering wheel, M-door sills, M-interior trims and is priced at 2k less den the coupe.

So for me, the 130i hatch handsdown.

Re: PML 125i coupe engine specs

Damn that seat looks good. Is it on the 135 or 125 coupes? Or on the hatch?

Re: PML 125i coupe engine specs

hi,

hp/torque values are:
135i : 315hp / 400Nm
130i: 270hp / 315Nm
125i: ?
120i: ?

Is it true that the 125i is using a detune 3.0 litres engine ? or a 2.5litres engine ?

Road tax wise ia a big different ?

please advice.

Re: PML 125i coupe engine specs

Guess how they detune the 3L to have lesser bhp/nm is about the same as the way BMW detune the E46 325i to E46 323i specs.

Re: PML 125i coupe engine specs

yeah... I actually placed an order for the 125 coupe last Saturday... managed to get the only one ex-stock (if the SE is not BSing me)... think will get the key early next month. I love the engine/exhaust "melody"... wind down the window just to hear "music".

damm nice engine / exhaust note rite ?

i'm now waiting for an insurance quote as well as trade in price before i sign on the dotted line.

dude, what was the price quoted to you ? any freebies ?

PM me so that we can compare notes ....hehe

PS: Were you quoted the pricing for Sunroof as well as Sat Nav ?

Re: PML 125i coupe engine specs

I was told by an SE that its better to wait for the Sept production since some options now will be standard then... Delivery end of the year. Just a thought.

hi sam,

any idea what options ?

at 152k, the car doesnt even come with I-drive or climate control, its really very very base.......

after adding the specs that i wanted, it came up close to 135i pricing levels.....

However i would still prefer a well-speced 125 coupe as my personal opinion after driving it is that BMW prob detuned the engine as the 1 coupe chasis isnt capable of handling too much power.....even in the detuned state, i had wheel spins and under steering round corners....

and i wasnt even at full throttle yet !

eagerly awaiting reviews from other members who test drove it !

Re: PML 125i coupe engine specs

Hey man,

Please take my words with a pinch of salt since that is what the SE told me. U may want to delve into it more if u are able to do so.

I'll find out the name & number of the SE and I'll PM u later.

As for the chassis having too much power, I think it can take more since its the same body as the 135i but with 306bhp/400nm. :)

Cheers!
Sam
