think u've just answered ur own question la... its all the above n COMFORT... n most importantly COST ( coz u have to upgrade ur entire brakes set, springs n shocks...n not forgetting expensive tires!!)
but of course u get wat u want at the end... looks!! ( no performance coz u then have to SuperCharge ur car to achieve both!! )
when i switched to 19".. the standard shock/suspension become the weakest link. the lower profile tyre is stiffer therefore shocks absorptions are being shouldered by the suspension. The ride become bouncy believe it or not as i experienced it. so i suggest don't go there till you retrofit one of those PSS9 or something
If u are driving a 523i with 177bhp, I think u are not looking at outright acceleration. Take off wld surely be more sluggish and FC will go up slightly. Dun be surprised if taxis outpace u from the traffic lites. But I think the biggest factor has got to be limited tyre choice and costs of tyres. Sure sibeh ex. Hell, I am not even sure if u have to special indent. In my view, 19" on the E60 is abt rite. So how abt considering the M5 rims? Keke.
nice car! go with 19s with proper suspension set up. u'll get the looks + ride comfort. If want to have a more garang look, stagger them. 20" on an e60 abit off & not cost effective.

bang, agreed on not necessary to change the brakes but better to change suspension coz it'll be a burden on the stock ones, in terms of performance. Looks wise, its macham wearing a pair of engineered jeans with zips instead of button fly!
