I just received this Okada Plasma Direct ignition coil was just wondering whether anyone uses it on Bimmer ? Any HP gain ?
Any feedbacks?..
Cheersss
this was formerly marketed as the Ignition Solutions plasma coils, IS has since been bought over by okada projects.
the theory is that these coils can be useful if you've gone FI on a previously NA engine as spark generation is more difficult with raised cylinder pressures; good if you're getting misfires at the moment due to problems with your spark generation.
the coils will also allow you to run a larger plug gap, which is supposed to yield a bigger spark kernel and thus a cleaner, more complete burn, ie more power.
downsides:
1) shorter life of these coils compared to OEM
2) back when they were labelled as IS coils, they would cause your BMW OBDII DME to lose its adaptation ability, so if you plug in a scanner, you'll find that your STFT and LTFT are always at 0%, regardless of how bad your tuning is.
most FI bmw owners who used IS coils have since switched to the bavauto ones, which apparently don't disable the adaptation in your DME. they only increase amperage to the primary spark by 10% and they're much cheaper.

these are not worth the trouble on NA applications unless you've significantly increased your compression ratio as the OEM ignition system is more than capable of coping.
