Nitrogen gas?

Recently heard from a fren that using nitrogen gas keeps tires inflated for longer time, up to 3 months as compared with normal that requires 2-4 weeks pumping. Is it good for run-flat tires? Appreciate the advice tks.

Re: Nitrogen gas?

you have to pay for nitrogen.

compressed air is free at the petrol station. just check tyre pressure every week or so when you top up your fuel.

imho, nitrogen is unnecessary expense unless you drive under extreme conditions (like at the track) where you need consistent and accurate tyre pressure. nitrogen is more stable - inert gas that leaks less. won't go into details.

just my 2 cents.

Re: Nitrogen gas?

light enough to make a difference on your nearly 20kg rim and tyre?

i thought it's being used to inflate tyres primarily because of its inert properties.

Re: Nitrogen gas?

20kg's your newbie track day face

yes, as its inhert, it doesnt deflate.

I like nitrogen, mix it with nitrous, add some exhaust heat, and you get 6 foot flames!

Re: Nitrogen gas?

Jin, does Leong seng pump normal air or nitrogen gas for the tyres bought there huh? Should be just air la, but I thought I just check, in case they pump nitrogen gas for me because I am handsome....

Re: Nitrogen gas?

dude, nothing is free, and from what i have seen, all the guys in leong seng are straight (so your handsome-ness not going to work lah).

so if you do not see it on your bill, it's air you have in your tyres. and nitrogen inflated tyres would most likely have a sticker on them.

on the other hand if you find a tyre shop with female mechanics, pls let me be the first to know. i'll purposely deflate my tyres everyday and go there to re-inflate.

Thanks for your help. It must be air then.

If got female mechanics, you want to go there and re-inflate what? Their tyres or your own tyres? Naughty, naughty, I tell your wife :lol2:

Sorry for OT.

Re: Nitrogen gas?

The critical thing for any tire gas is that it be dry. Atmospheric air, as long as dehumidified, will work to maintain a more constant pressure across a wider range of temperatures. What tire shops use to lubricate the bead and edge of the rim as they mount tires can affect this greatly. There are other factors to consider, but they do not really become important till you get to much more developed and specific levels far beyond street applications.

Re: Nitrogen gas?

Nope Question: Can nitrogen gas add-on with air?

Technically, they can mix - they won't explode.

But it defeats the purpose of putting nitrogen in. So nobody does it :)

Re: Nitrogen gas?

Thanks everyone for sharing ... costs and distance to tire shop that offers this is definitely a consideration. Much like the CNG debacle...

Re: Nitrogen gas?

our air contains 2/3 nitrogen gas and yes you can mix them, only thing is reducing the percentage of nitrogen gas inside your tyre.
if this is your liking distance and trouble wont be problem,.
checking of tyre pressure is still a must as usual and will find you no need to add gas like before with normal air.,anyway i dont thing lighten weight make any different

i also thinking our atmospheric air already contain so much nitrogen, why pay to get a little bit more?

If Nitrogen is so lasting, wouldn't the rest of the non nitrogen air escape from the tire 1st, leaving mostly nitrogen in the tires? Meaning that after a long time, my tires will naturally have a higher concentration of nitrogen??

Re: Nitrogen gas?

oh god. why so bloody techo

just pump notrogen lah, no big deal. If race cars do it, then i will too

Re: Nitrogen gas?

you are right after you pumping your tyre for 10 time or 1 yr later ,you mayhave almost all nitro, but you have not enjoy the 1 of the benefit that is nitro does not need to pump so often.
anyway it is all individual preference, just like installing all optioanl items on your car.

Re: Nitrogen gas?

I was just at SPC kiosk, East Coast Road, and got Michelin people there giving free tyre check and souvenirs (including valve caps & umbrella - golf type). Spoke to a French guy who is based in Malaysia. He professed, "nitrogen is marketing gimmick, to get you to go back to shop on regular basis". He explained that he had experience in racing, and nitrogen to him made no diff. I mentioned about nitrogen making it lighter, and he replied again, no diff.

Re: Nitrogen gas?

aeroplanes use nitrogen in their tires.

and i go back to the same shop where i bought my tires and get free n2 refills btw. it's only the original fill that cost me $.

Re: Nitrogen gas?

if he said like that ,than all the marketing people will lost thier job,
membership card, discount card ,loyalty propram are all marketing gimmick ?
