Newbie reporting

Hello everyone, I'm new to BMW, few days ago just gotten myself a 1992 318iA left with 3 years of coe. Hell lotsa problem with the car dealer, try to con every single cents out of me!

Anyway found this site very useful with so many people willing to share. Hope to get some good tips to touch up and mend the little details expected to come along with old cars.

But first of all will have to settle the stalling problem first thing first tomorrow. The engine "mati" a few times today. Upon successful ignition, will have to pedal the accelerator for a few minutes. Quite a challenge to do this because the rpm drops 800 as soon as the pedal is released and then surely drops further .... and stops..... Don't even get a chance to shift to "D"!

Re: Newbie reporting

Hi every body. Engine stall problem rectified

Engine stalling problem solved today. Went to a workshop at Yishun, saw the boss removed the air filter, poke his entire hand through to feel something, give a few tap to the ICV, check a few hose and eventually got rid of an aftermarket superione ST777. So the superione gets the blame and transfered to "east chamber" in my boot. Now I'm monitoring the engine rpm, hope that it stays ok.

First DIY to bmw today is to change the boot lid damper, just a five mins job after getting it from Eng Soon. Oh found out that it is actually cheaper if get from Goldenlink Auto but too late; anyway just different by a few dollars lah...

Next DIY is to change the lock set. Because I was only given one key; this key only for ignition, cannot be used to open any doors! I view this as a time bomb, so no compromise, coming Sat is reserved for this.

Thanks anyway, this forum is good especially with people like yourself who shares and response fast.

hi milk15, you've got pm

Yup, got it. I can see from your last post. You are going to DIY on your lock set?
Bro, if you going to use 01 key to start ignition and open ur doors including ur boot lock. DIY? No so easy..... I do have the set for all the locks into 01 key but i dun think it's easy to DIY on the ignition switch.

Re: Newbie reporting

Actually, i think the ignition will be the easiest of them all, should only be a small spring holding it in, have to use a paper clip, push through a small hole and it will release.Of course have to remove the covers first!! Boot should be easy as well, possibly a horsehoe clip, same with the doors, except dooors gotta remove the door panel!

Failing that, get the ignition key coded to all the other locks, simple

Re: Newbie reporting

Well thanks phil for the tips. I will see what I can do, and let you guys know once I'm done. As for milk15, nice meeting you. Didn't realise that you have already posted, but still short of one key. Ask Johnaton to keep an eye for me when another set arrive but with at least 2 keys. I've left my contact no with him. Thanks....

Thank-you. Well hope to fix it on step at a time. :)

milk15, got the complete lockset with 01 key from you guys last friday already. Sounds challenging, dedicated whole of yesterday to this project. Only two-third done, ignition part had to wait for next week as it got dark and couldn't see properly especially with my "old flower" eye:furious:

Well Phil, the easiest one to change is the boot's lockset. Just two nuts and five minutes.:)

Next I decided to try the front passenger side, play safe don't meddle with driver side first because fear may have too many gadget inside. This part took up most of the time, it includes dismantling the wooden panel which was already very loose and falling... Worse still the window (glass) gets in the way. Anyway did some fumbling and managed to declare victory over it. Fix up everything including taking some time to mend the door panel; having to make a few more holes and relocating the clips. Now it is rock solid and doesn't gives irritating creaking sounds anymore.. :nehnehhh:

Repeat the whole procedure for the driver side. This time it is easier and faster.

Finally left with the ignition part. After having removed the steering wheel, part of the front panel, some cover, realised that I can't proceed without proper tools. Think I have come to the final stage of dismantling the assembly but was presented with 2 "torn bolt". WTF why they design it this way. A quick look at my time, wow 5 hrs already and then wifey call to remind that time for dinner. Ok keep this for next week. Quickly put back everything and want to drive off, realise that right hand side horn is not working. Remove steering wheel and check again, settled and fixed back. Call wifely to come down in 5 mins to go for dinner. Then I "kalang kabut", realised that all the power windows are not working!, :furious: :furious: :furious: Did I damaged anything, or cause a short circuit? Worse still, my multimeter revealed no open fuse. Everything is intact! But windows still cannot wind up!

Wifey arrived. Told her all the windows are not working no mood for dinner liao. Even though it's getting dark, I will still need to troubleshoot and rectify further. Now this is where the woman power come in. She played around and examined some of the switches and then ask "what is this button for?" OMG there is a button just behind/ next to ignition lock that cuts off power supply to the power windows. Just press that little button and everything goes back to normal:yummie: :yummie: Thanks to the women power!

I will try to find time next week to change the ignition part. Meanwhile having seperate key for ignition and open doors.

A very eventful weekend .....:woowooo:
