New WTCC 320si for 2006

Hi Guys

From what I have read or at least seen in Germancarfans.com, the 320si WTCC is a 4 pot valvetronic.

How the FU*K did they manage to squeeze 275 BHP from the engine I presume is basically the same one we have in our 2.0l valvetronic???

I know, alot of mods go into the car but seems like BMW will sell this limited "souped up" 320 as a road car too.

The thing is, are we able to find out more about what went into the car that resulted in the huge power gains and maybe get our hands on those stuff?

I mean, esp if the block is still N.A. and they mentioned some ECU version in the review as well.

BTW, this is the E90 version and I recall that the current version is the 6-potter E46 2.2L right?

Thanks for any information!

Cheers!

No way it's gonna be the same engine as yours bro! Dun tink it's a valvetronic too!

BMW Motorsports have been developing inline4 for racing quite awhile liao....b4 the E90 was the 4pot E46....I think I still have the catalog of the E46 4pot race car somewer...

Orh..........

So you are saying that they only use the E90 "Shell" whereas the engine is a totally different one?

But, the part about them selling a limited number of units for road use leh?

Thanks!

the series limited the engine capacity to a 2L production engine. so basically for the e46, they are using the M52 engine, with a few beefed up components, and a really high rev limiter for high bhp. you can mod your engine to this spec, but i dont think one is willing to rebuild your engine every 2 weeks.

the same goes for the e90 car. it's using a production engine with a much higher redline.

RB

So you figure what engine is this 2006 version then?

Thanks!

Re: New WTCC 320si for 2006

It is all geometry. Look at the bore to stroke ratio and the valve area to displacement ratio. The historically proven race parameters are again reproduced.

At 331+ cc per cylinder at specified geometry, redline is expected to be no higher than 9800 RPM. With prime production engines turning 9000 RPM at lasting an easy 50,000 miles at average sport driving mix, it is not unreasonable that a street applied Touring engine could last an easy 25,000 miles - a lot more than a 2 week rebuild interval.

The expected service life will drop very sharply any time hard driving in the form of trackdays or races are run though. If you spend an hour operating the engine at an average of 3000 RPM, and another hour operating at an average of 6000 RPM, the latter hour has inertially stressed the engine 400% greater, and consumed limited fatigue cycles at that raised load at a rate 100% faster. So in NA terms, the narrower the operating engine speed range of an engine, the less variance there is in service life.

The Touring engine will be a very good sport engine but will not be cheap, and will not be as suitable as other street-focused engines for a dedicated street application, no matter how crutched it is. Whatever variable-this-and-that crutches can be applied to it to make it acceptable for the street, can be applied to a street engine to make it an even greater street engine. The compromises lay in hardware that at this point in time are completely fixed, no matter what production or racing rank you look to.

if it's a 4 cylinder 2.0L, it's very likely that it's the valvetronic. else, where will bmw get another 4 cylinder from? A modification of the M42/M43/M44 engine? what's the bore/stroke for the valvetronic?
