New Tyres needed

Hi Guys,

some amature question:-

1) My Ride is about 2 years old and done about 35,000 km. Yesterday i notice that the 2 front tyres are bald. the left side is more bald then the right but the difference is not that much. Is it normal for the tyres to run bald so fast?

2) I intend to keep to RFT. What tyres can I you guys recommend and where can i go? Also good if you can advise on the price for the tires. I also intend to keep it to the stock size, ie. 225/50/16? The ride is a 320i 2006 E90.

3) I know i am asking for too much, but I think i need the tyres to be safe in dry and wet, and not sacrifice the comfort level too much.

too late guys...

had to get it done by this afternoon, so when to Chin Wah and slap on the Pzero RFT at $321 a piece.

how is this tyre? any one have any experience?

Also, i notice that RFT i had previously don't seem to last very long, only 35,000km... the uncle in the shop told me it is already very long. Normally people change it when it is around 20,000km...

35,000km is about right. alo depends on ur acceleration and braking habits as well. the more aggressive the more u wear the tyres out.

Pzero is a nosy tyre. but i must say the price seems low for a RFT. expecting it to hit 500 a piece. what size wheels u running?

Sure, that is what this forum is for...

I have driven about 100 km with the Pzero. First impression, its not yokohama quiet. But then again, RFTs are never as quiet as non RFT tires.

The grip on dry ground is good. this morning when i did a 75kmph turn into AYE from Clementi Road, the tyres didn't give me any uncomfortable feel.

I have yet to take it out on wet grounds yet, there are some split review about how the tyres perform on wet grounds. Some say it sucks, some rate it 4.5 out of 5.

Overall, i think they tyres are not bad. just a tad noiser than i was hoping for. But if the grip makes up for it, i guess it is a fair give and take.

Would i buy it again? well, only if it is cheaper than the rest.

but my review is based on 100 km of driving and i think the tyres is not broken into yet. tyres tend to behave rather differently after they are being broken into.

i used to have pzero on my other car, but it wasn't RFT. If that is of any indication to the RFT, noise creeps in at around 15,000km... and it becomes really noisy... but they hug the road very well...

did you check the manufacturing date of the tire? Be careful, esp since so many ppl trade in their stock RFT. I expect sales of these tires to be slower, thus alot of old stock which tire shops sell cheaper.

A friend bought a used car recently, and the dealer said he replaced the tires with new ones. When i inspected them, turned out the damn things were 4 years old. How to use?! even Dunlop (the manufacturer) recommended not to use, and the Dunlop SG rep told me warranty also over for such a period of time.

Plus, when my friend confronted the dealer they didn't wanna state the tire shop, but in hokkien they were talking amongst themselves and mentioned "the tire shop at orchard". How many shops do you know in the Orchard area that most (ex)/PML staff use? I only know of ONE.

to be very honest with you... i also suspect the tires i got was a traded in set. 2 tell tale signs...

1) usually there is a sticker label for new tyres, but in my case, it was a masking tape.

2) Usually there is the marks on the tyre to show that it is new. But in my case, it wasn't there.

however, the studs on the tyres were all there, so i didn't KPKB.

And i went to the one at orchard road, coz its just behind my office.

Review, after about a week of usage. The tyres seems to have become quieter. maybe it is because i am getting used to it. Wet Grip is pretty good so far. one thing i realised. Usually tyres perform better after it is warmed up. In the case of the Pzero, the performance of the tyres cold or warm, doesn't have much difference.

actually, my whole family patronizes their shop. My mom swears by them (she gets along v well with the lady boss there), even if some of their brands are priced higher. They are pretty good with installations. They supposedly provided PML with tires in the past, dunno if it's still the case now.

BUT even when you do a trade in with them, i wonder they replace with older stock too. Eg: when i traded in my brand new RFTs via my SE, the manufacture date of the PS2s I got was a little old. But i forgot to check on collection, and left it. Maybe their PS2 stock was moving slow then. Don't recall the previous PS2 sets we bought to be such old stock.

And precisely because they take a lot of trade ins, i think the discounted RFTs tend to be from those, rather than brand new stock. But seriously, if they charged you lower versus brand new stock, then it's a factored in discount. Just check the manufacture date on the tires. If its not some ridiculous age like 4 years, it should be fine.

just to share my view
the party who told you they replaced it with NEW tyre is the car dealer ,you should not blame the tyre shop ,why you never think that when the car dealer went to the tyre shop ask for the lowest possible choice of tyre ?
My understanding these car dealer sometime they also change the tyre around from their old car.
By the way when you looking for a used car ,to me the most important things to be aware are, mileage, engine,under carriage,major accident free .

yup, dealer is cheapo, as expected. but if a grocery store sells the kopi stall expired milk, you will blame the stall owner only? even NEA will fine the grocery store. to me, a tire shop should not sell tires that exceed even the manufacturer's recommended time frame, regardless of how kiam a dealer wants to be. this is simple ethics, and this involves the safety of human lives. Anyway, main point of sharing that story was so others will be more aware when buying tires, not educate on used car dealers.

yup, good for a used car to have all the things you mentioned, but if that car gets a busted OLD tire while on the freeway, all those things mean nothing. but i admit, i don't have any experience with used cars. i don't like buying used cars or tires.

to me running tyre less than 5 years are still safe to use.
as far as i known all branded tyre carry a 5 year quality wanrranty.(correct me if i am wrong)\
i heard only michelin give 1 extra yrs meanning 6 yrs factory warranty (this exclude PI product) this policy actually applied to all quality brand.
they said PI tyre are different rubber compound (specification)
so is still alright to buy a tyre that 1-2 yrs made,because they store the tyre under the roof without sun light and rain so the rubber does not deteriorating much as compare to those running all the road.
just like can milk as mentioned it is still safe to drink 1-2 days going to expired ?
unfortunately our relavant authority does not enforce law like food industries.
if is it will definitely benifit consumers like us and also fair to the seller too.

i've never used the oem tires off my cars, so never noticed the tire age. But if you read articles off safety commission sites, US laws typically state that tires past 6 years of age cannot be sold.

That said, tire compound quality can deteriorate even without usage. Besides, we don't know how the tires were stored, and our climate is hot, dunno if humidity is a factor too.

Best way to gauge is call the local manufacturer rep and ask what's the warranty period. They will be more motivated in ensuring they are not liable for any accidents due to tire failure. For me, i change tires before it hits four years, regardless of tread wear. After all, it's what's giving your car grip on the road. Maybe i'm too cautious and conservative; living on the wild side - drinking expired milk and stale bread by choice doesn't really appeal to me

sorry, i don't totally follow your post? But from what i can make of it - you are confident to use your tires till they are 9 years old. You confirm save alot of money.

Of course consumers can do whatever they choose. You can even drive with rubber bands on your wheels if you like, your life. Just important for consumers to know what they are buying.

I am just quoting what the tyre maker siad and stated in their book.
