Been in Singapore a while and just bought an e36 320i, the e36 is on of my all time favorites. Quick question: I have an old e36 with 2.8 M52 and manual tranny back in the UK, would it be a serious headache and financial setback LTA wise to ship the engine and tranny in and upgrade the car. Their website didn't give too much info on doing this.

Regards

Welcome to the forum and sorry to be the bearer of bad news. It is illegal to bring in those parts and retrofitting them onto your ride. HOWEVER, u can do it on the sly.... ;)

Welcome Jon!

I had an E36 318is back when I was in London - my first BMW and start of the love affair... still think fondly of that E36...

Enjoy your ride and the forum!

Re: New member saying hi

what we are trying to tell you is this. since both the engines are 6 cylinder, it's kinda hard to tell the difference by just looking at them when they are under the bonnet. even the guys ar LTA would not be able to tell unless they take it apart.

1st thing: how to ship the engine over here. and what explanation are you going to give the customs people when they ask. this one can be quite tricky.

2nd thing: find a workshop that will do it for you. this one is not difficult.

woah a 2.8 manual e36. that is a real monster man. :cloud9:

Re: New member saying hi

Thanks for the welcome guys,
I sort of figured there would be issues with the 2.8, I used to live up in KL and have a mate with a workshop so hypothetically speaking that would be an option. The engine is in need of rebuilding so when next back in UK I could strip n ship to KL in 3 different loads as used motor spares not a complete engine. Malaysian customs are usually pretty straight forward to deal with as long as you have the right shipping agent...lol

But I reckon the LTA inspectors would know the difference between auto and manual tranny's - I hate the auto absolutely no fun (2 modes 'S' for Sub powerband, 'E' - Excessively sub powerband)

If it's illegal though I most likely won't bother.

Regards

Jon
