Volkswagen has released the first details of its powerful new Volkswagen Golf R, ahead of the formal launch at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month.

With a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 295 potent German horses and 380Nm of torque, the power is transferred to the tarmac via the latest 4MOTION four-wheel drive system. Under low loads or when coasting, the rear axle is decoupled, aiding in fuel efficiency, yet within fractions of a second, the drive to the rear axle can be engaged and if necessary, almost 100 percent of power can be transferred to the rear axle.

The Golf R is not all about the muscle, as it's 18 percent more efficient than its predecessor The new Golf R is the fastest accelerating production Golf yet, with the benchmark century sprint timing to be completed in just 5.3 seconds - 0.2 seconds faster than its predecessor. The car is even faster when fitted with the optional six-speed DSG gearbox, at 4.9 seconds before climbing to a governed top speed of 249km/h.
The Golf R is powered by a newly developed version of the TSI engine found in the GTI model, but with certain mechanical changes like a modified cylinder head, exhaust valves, pistons and turbocharger among others.
The Golf R is 20mm lower than the standard Golf, and 5mm lower than the GTI. Like the GTI and GTD, the Golf R is equipped with progressive steering, which reduces the number of turns lock to lock to just 2.1, rather than 2.75.
Visually, the Golf R can be distinguished by its new front bumper design, modified radiator grille with 'R' badging and newly developed daytime running lights that are integrated into the standard bi-xenon headlights. Bespoke body-coloured sills, and black brake callipers with 'R' logos can be found on the car's profile. At the rear, there are smoked LED taillights and quadruple chrome-tipped exhaust pipes - a pair flanking the 'R' diffuser on either side.
The interior features sports seats with a fabric centre section and Alcantara bolsters, while the instrument dials are bespoke for the R model, and include typical touches such as blue needles.
