when the first CLS came out, it created a brand new niche, which many other manufacturers later on began to follow to fill with their own products, like the Passat CC and the A5. Nothing else looked like it. It had a really sleek design, like a taut designer zegna suit. I suspect BMW quickly came up the the X6 coz they were inspired and pressured to create a niche (or two, now that they have the 5GT) of their own.
In a sad case of the movie-sequel syndrome, the 2nd generation CLS now just looks like the CL with 4 doors. The plot's lost, but who can blame them. Movie sequels can never live up to the original's hype (unless its Terminator 2, but I digress hahaha). A 4-door coupe is really not simply just a sloping roofline on a sedan. So many more design cues need to follow up on the idea, to get a complete product.
