Need help with my new ride

Hi folks,

Have just got myself a R32 golf and take delivery at the end of this week. Am itching to change the rims and need some help. When the Salesperson told me that the stock rims are really heavy and thus the most obvious thing he would change, that made the decision that much easier for me.

Have been a long time fan of the BBS CH rims and was thinking of just Nikeing it. Are there any other alternatives I should consider? I want to keep the rims and tires standard in terms of sizing. In terms of look, I prefer a slightly more 'european' look. I would consider an alternative to the CH if I liked the look and it was lighter than the CH.

And does anyone know whether the rims and tires of the R32 are identical in size and offset to those on the GTi when factory fitted with the 18 inch rims?

TIA for all help rendered:)

Re: Need help with my new ride

Thanks Kenn and Centurion! Found out from the sales rep that the R32 has 18*8 rims while the factory option 18s on the GTI are 18*7.5. Thus offsets for the 2 cars are likely to be different. He is now trying to confirm that the offset for the original rims are 50.

Odd funny and useless fact of the day: The standard rims for the MY08 R32 (which my car is supplied with but looks different from the zillion spoke alpina looking ones that you see frequently on R32s on our roads) is called a OMANYT rim. For the GTI they have nice names like detriot and denver but for the R32.......

Re: Need help with my new ride

It is not difficult to get 18' X 8 inch rims for the R32. Stock offset is +50' and IMHO, offset +48 is the most ideal. +44 you rub especially if lowered. The rims are not staggered like a Bimmer. How does the new design look lilke?

Congrats on your new purchase and do share with the VAG folks more about your restoration job. Love it. :)

If the offset is indeed +50, PCD 5x112 then look no further but this one below
18*8, Forged Volk Racing Progressive ME by RAYS
Weight shud be in the region of 9kg only. CH is definitely hitting 10kg at least.
It's got continental look, DTM style. Theres is another lighter one the RE30 but I think u will find it a bit JDM-esque

But let me warn you first, this rim is getting quite popular esp amongst BMW guys so there maybe a lack of individuality if that might concern you.

Re: Need help with my new ride

and congrats on the new ride Les,
my new ride has the same tail pipes as yours in terms of visual appearance muahahahahahahha

Re: Need help with my new ride

Those Volks look really really good. Volks on a Volks. Who would have thought? :)

Awesome! Are these the ones that our dear toto is putting on his Golf (i.e. the racing progressive ME and not the RE30)? As for popularity, not a concern for me. The BBS CH are also very popular but for me, matter of looks and weight and not really to be individual.

Most important question. Buy where? And how much?

....and that is where the similarity ends. Collected yet or not?

Re: Need help with my new ride

Not yet collect Les...arriving this w/e was told so hopefully Mid Dec

Toto got the VR RE30, not the VR Prog ME. He is beng so he ordered bronze color one.

Place to buy : Leong Seng at Paya Ubi Ind Park
Look for Daniel 67444280

Price should be in the range of low to mid 3k for the 18*8 without rubber
I guess u can use back urs rite?

Re: Need help with my new ride

actually ordered some new rubber! I dont particularly like the dunlop sports maxx as supplied so ordered a set of the new model p zeros. Should be pretty fun!

Re: Need help with my new ride

great rubber...i'd like to try em myself too

Re: Need help with my new ride

having had the car for 2 days, have come to the conclusion that it is a massive amount of car for the money.

The engine note, the gearbox, the effortless power (limited to 4k rpm currently), the (small)size of the entire package, the fact that is carries my 2 older kids and a weeks worth of groceries effortlessly..... all of it combines into such a easily usable daily package.

Man! What a car...

Re: Need help with my new ride

I thot at first i read it's a massive amt of money for a car hahaha

Enjoy the new ride man, congrats
VW 4Motion AWD tech rite?

Re: Need help with my new ride

Yup. But it is surprisingly easily to slide about. Took it to Pasir Panjang on the first morning and it was pretty fun to chuck about.

Although, it could well have been down to the fact that the p zeros were only 12 hours old.....

Les,

I must forwarn you that with an offset of +50, the Progressive ME does not look good. I have seen it in the flesh and mounted on a GTI. The MEs only look good in 19" onwards.

You may wanna look at rims with offsets of +45 so that the rims/tyres are flushed with the fender with no rubbing. +44 may rub depends on ride height.

Why not upsize to 19"? Your R32 can take it. If you choose light rims, will compensate for the weight of the 235/35/19 tyres.
