You can buy an engine compression tester and do it yourself. Can own one for less than $80. :) I have one.

Perhaps I can share my experience as I did one few months back at Autogarage at Paya Ubi, saw their website from vagsg forum.

They used a small hand held instrument which has one end stuck into your cylinder heads (with spark plugs removed) and the other end has some sort of a 'reader' which inscribes lines onto a chart, recording pressure readings of individual cylinders when engine is cranked.

Cost me half your quoted price.

I don't think you can tell if a particular workshop has the machinery to do a compression test. Best to go in and ask, i guess.....As it is manual I'm not sure if this is the surest way - maybe others can share? To be honest I was initially expecting a more 'automated' way of testing.

BTW you can check out a thread which I posted in the 'Classics Folder' called "Older engines - anyone done engine overhaul".

Hopes this helps. Good Luck :wavey:
