Need advise. WTB used 5 series

Hi Guys,

Am new here.

Looking to buy used 5 series. Either 520i , 523i or 525i. Saw a 520i which is going for quite a good deal but seems like a lot of features missing. Have a few questions below which I hope all the bros here can help. Thanks in advanced!:D

1) Besides the engine difference, what other main differences between these models.

2) 520i , does it come with sports mode? to shift gear ourself?

3) I looked around a '05 520i and saw that the iDrive software looks different from a '06 523i. The look & feel is simpler, or am I mistaken? Can upgrade the software?

4) Which car have the keyless entry defaulted? Ie, if i am standing beside the car with the key in my pocket, I can open the car door.

5)Smart key and push start. Signal light side mirror. Only the latest 5 series have it?

The new 5 series coming out, any idea if the old 5 prices will drop??

Hi Scoutman. Welcome to the forum. Regarding your last question, are you asking about prices of a new old-5 or a used old-5? When u say drop, do u mean drop from last month, last 6 months or last one year's prices or drop in the future? (what periods are u comparing with?)

BTW what car r u driving now?

- 523 & 525 same engine size but different tuning to get diff power
- 5 series have many different spec from time to time, the higher spec cars are aroung oct 07 onward, event cars like Asian aerospace or IMF have different spec too (lower spec).

-All bmw have, pre facelift and facelifted 5 series cars have different gear stick

-Not able to advise can upgrade or not but i do know that pre facelift and facelift cars have iDrive knob of different look and the software also not the same

- Don't think PML E60 5 series have this function unless special indent by buyer

5)Smart key and push start. Signal light side mirror. Only the latest 5 series have it?
- Push start appear in E60 late 06 onwards, not sure what you mean by smart key.
- Signal light integrated side mirror does not appear in E60 from factory but i think can be retrofit locally

The new 5 series coming out, any idea if the old 5 prices will drop??

- Sure drop, its only a matter of HOW MUCH and WHEN

Wtih regards to the price drop qns, I was actually considering closing a deal on a used 5 this coming weekend. But now, knowing that the new 5 is going to arrive late May, it would be such a blow if the overall market price drops by a substantial amt next month due to a large influx of used 5 into the used cars market. Then I would be better off waiting for next month when I will have more choices?

Just a hypothesis.

that is why i ask u what is your time horizon.. If ur time horizon is just one month, I don't believe you will see a sudden large influx of used 5s in the market from now till next month. Just my 2 cents.

i am facing the same question too but in a slightly different way
i'm being offered a used 530 at $193k.
grey with grey interior, reg date july 08.

thinking of upsizing from my 523
what you guys think should be the value today?

I believe FL 525i & above from mid-2007 onwards has Comfort Access. Not sure, but some batches of FL 523i too may have it.

sell your 523 to scoutman, and get the 530....:dance:

my car is very fully utilised, not suitable to sell friends/relatives/acquitances ... :shhhh:

i cruise 60% of the time, wot 30% of the time and full throttle 10% of the time

and i clocked 100k in 3yrs travelling in singapore only.

fyi, warranty just over and i'm going to start light modding liao

Hi guys, I'm also new to the forum. Thinking of buying 2005 523i from the 2nd hand car dealer and found a nice looking black colour with 47,000 km mileage. From the exterior and interior everything seems very nice and shiny but it's the engine that I'm concerned and the mileage (possibility of odometer being tampered?). The reason is that upon checking the log book the last service was done at 24,000 km and in Jan last year. My friend told me that nowadays PML no longer stamp the log book and everything has been computerised. He suggested that I bring the car key to PML and they will be able to check the service history. Honestly I don't think PML will entertain my request since I am not buying from their PPSL:) The dealer say that they can send the car to STA once the deal is done but I also don't trust STA due to bad reviews.

I would appreciate any advice from you guys regarding this predicament and whether it is really possible to temper with the mileage? Currently I'm also checking with BVO whether they can do this service. Thanks a lot in advance:)

I think I know which model you are looking at. I just bought a E60 and actually the one you are looking at was my second/alternative choice. I chose another care because it was an '06 model with push start button.

I looked at the black 523 and remember that it was quite ok externally and interior. My opinion on the exterior and interior is that it is quite good. In fact, even though I've bought mine already, I think that your black 523's interior is in better condition. It's just that I wanted to get a push start model.

The low mileage is an attractive point but do note that since the last service is more than 1.5yrs ago and more than 20k ago. I'm not sure if you can do the key thing with PML. What I know is that you can call PML and tell them the licence plate of the car and enquire if it has been svc there and what was the last mileage. you can use this to verify what you saw. If I'm not wrong, this car has a new plate. You would need the old plate number to make queries with PML. PML only gives out limited info as you are not the owner. Maybe other Bros can help advise further on this.

I think one thing is for sure, you would definately need to svc this one asap if you buy it.

Thanks for your advise. Definitely I will service this car immediately if I do get it. I'm not sure if the dealer will give me the previous plate no. or maybe I can check at the log book?

Apparently only PML can check whether the odometer has been tampered so I will have to negotiate with the dealer to allow me to bring the car to PML. You think they would allow me to do this?
