Hi,

come down to our meetup and then decide what to get. This is the best option...last Sunday of the month

Re: Need advice for newbie 320 i

Hi all,

Sorry to hijack this thread, but the topic seems vaguely relevant and I've yet to earn my "Create New Thread" stripes.

I've just gotten a new 2011 E92 320i, the LCI version, and I'm thoroughly confused about the engine. When I placed my order my PML rep gave me a brochure that showed that the engine made 156 bhp/200 Nm torque, but the newest brochures on the PML website for exactly the same car now show 170 bhp/210 Nm. Anyone knows which one is correct and what's the story behind the differing numbers? On comparing, the two engines are exactly the same (N46B20BD with direct injection, double VANOS and Valvetronic), but differ on the compression ratio (10.5 vs 12).

156 or 170, it's still a very nice, peppy ride, but I'm dying to know why the numbers are different just 2 weeks apart for exactly the same car. :)

(I've been lurking here for a while and yes I know I should've gotten an i6 325.. but given SG's traffic and the number of lane hoggers on the right lane, I didn't feel any justification paying an additional $30k plus increased taxes and insurance).

yes, i noticed that too on the bmw international website. 170+ bhp and 210NM of torque.

Yeah it's weird. Almost like the first brochure I got (which i cannot find anywhere else) was a pre-release edition. I'm thinking 170 bhp might be correct because the car is feels pretty fast and overtakes effortlessly, though being an i4 it needs a bit of revs. This is in contrast to opinions I've read about the 150 bhp versions of the E90.

Re: Need advice for newbie 320 i

at least u got the upgraded one. have fun with ur ride mate

Re: Need advice for newbie 320 i

Thanks bro! It's a really cool ride. :) But I'm still dying to know the reason behind the different numbers.. haha.

Re: Need advice for newbie 320 i

nothing new i reckon. they have to keep innovating to entice customers. especially since the model has been around for a while. body facelift, interior facelift, engine facelift. u name it, they will do it

Simple. Juz key in your last 7 alphanumeric of your vin number to realoem & u should be able to see whether it is N46B20 or N43B20 O1.

If realoem don't have, u can try this German webby:

It's definitely an N46, not an N43 (says so on the door frame), but after much googling I know that the N46 also comes in 170 bhp version. I think the main difference between the two is that the N43 does not have Valvetronic? In this case the engines in both the previous brochure and the current one have Valvetronic.

N46B20 definitely don't have 170bhp. Max = 156.

By the way, ur batch no should be KD52.

CONGRATS on your new ride. changing everything sounds very fierce. :)

there are many choices avail but if your budget does not constraint, can consider arquay or eisenmann.

rims, also dep on what budget you have. you want OEM look or JDM or ang moh rims. 18 or 19? staggered?

body kit? can surf the site sponsors area and there are many avail.

Wiki buay teo lei. There's at least one variation of the N46 (N46NB20) that has 170 bhp, and this wasn't covered (though it's in the German version of the wiki page) From what I understand as well, the previous N46's were multipoint fuel injectors. The current LCI engines are high precision direct injectors (presumably that's what the "D" in N46B20BD stands for).

The only difference I can see between the 156bhp engine in the earlier brochure and the 170 bhp engine in the later brochure is that one is 10.5:1 compression and the other is 12:1 compression. Otherwise the two cars are identical.

Re: Need advice for newbie 320 i

Anyways back to my original question: Does anyone know why the numbers changed between brochures for what is supposed to be exactly the same car? I got my E92 ex-stock (I ordered it on the 2nd day the E92 LCIs were in the PML show room, according to the rep), and then the brochures changed a week later showing 170bhp.

Assuming that my E92 makes 156bhp, and a week later there would presumably still be 156 bhp 320i E92's on stock, but now the brochures say 170 bhp.

Any possibility that PML brochures have a different engine rating from the stock they are holding? Sounds a bit dodgy.. lol.

Yes, KD52. What does that mean? (Sorry newbie.. tried googling but never got any wiser after that). It was built at the Regensburg plant in March 2010.

Guys, don't be too surprised if one of you put a stock E9x 320i on the dyno irregardless of whatever form of injection and see a figure below 150hp. I've seen an average of 130 engine power(and not Wheel power) on most 320i. The only way to "touch" 150 Wheel horse power is to do a stage1 upgrade. Spend on a good airbox, get a more free flowing muffler and tune the ECU. From my knowledge, only the Pre LCI models can be tuned currently..LCI models will have to wait until software engineers have cracked the security code on the ECU itself..

Till then, happy modding and happy driving ;)
