Motor Authority » International Engine of the Year awards announced

Winning Streak? :)

What's a normally aspirated 4.2-liter direct-injected 420 horsepower V8 with an 8,250 rpm redline gotta do to get a little respect around here? For the ninth year in a row Engine Technology International Magazine has presented their International Engine of the Year Award. In 2005 BMW took down 6 wins, including the (possibly) coveted International Engine of the Year. In 2006, the Bavarians only managed to win 5 awards (Volkswagen's 1.4-liter twin charger jumped up and bit their ankles in the (maybe) hotly contested 1-liter to 1.4-liter category), but once again, the M5's 5-liter V10 took top honors. Again. This year? Once again BMW took down 6 of the 11 awards, but best engine honors did not go to their mighty V10. Instead, the twin-turbo straight-6 from the 335i took top honors. Remember, even though BMW says the thing only makes 300 horses, that mill actually kicks out 350 hp. Los Jalopers? We'd still rather have the 4.2 out of the RS4. Or the 4.4 out of the E39 M5. Cause we're iconoclastic like that. – Jonny Lieberman

DOnt you know the N54 is underrated on paper? PPl are getting close to 330~340hp with that thing. Its just done that way so as to make the gap btw the 335i and the new m3 as well as not pissing off current M owners. Its called strategic marketing. :)

dyno.

The claim of 300BHP is probably for .... insurance purposes.

That the N54 3L TT I6 won... is probably the only award which I totally agree. As for the rest, it's highly debatable. Like the 3.6 Porsche turbo - which won simply because of the variable turbine geometry turbo with NO significant developments to the engine since the 996 days ... well ... they should have a best turbocharger competition now. Engine should not be celebrated if it is indeed the turbo which shines.

No wonder someone said this N54 TT engine was actually originally meant for the YAM3. So its a good idea to get a 335 afterall and replace all the 335 badges with ///M badges, plus quad pipes ...then we have a BMW ///O-3 aka Omar-Motorsports-3 ?:lol2:

Re: N54 Named Engine Of The Year

Best engine, but worst fuel pump !!!

Re: N54 Named Engine Of The Year

No worries...fuel pump is cheap.

The E92 M3 engine will get the top honor in 2008...hehe...
Strong contender will be the Nissan GTR Skyline V6 TT which will debut in tokyo auto show later this yr.

Re: N54 Named Engine Of The Year

If the 335 is underrated n really givs 350bhp, then this intl award had just screwed up M3's potential sales. Its too close to the M3's 420bhp.

Re: N54 Named Engine Of The Year

looks like the horsepower war will never abate... wont be long before camrys start dishing out 200bhp!

Heard the next ferrari replacement for the F430 is some F540... thats 5.4 litre... you can guess the Bhp of that demon.. hur hur

den maybe the 420bhp M3 is underratted as well and gives 450+?

Maybe u r right. Afterall they need some reserves for the M3 CSL and they also got a M5 V10 which they cannot afford to screw up.

Re: N54 Named Engine Of The Year

There was a time I was obsessed with HP. Now though, because I am not richer than god and because of doing my bit for the environment, my target: a RELATIVELY light car with JUST ENOUGH HP to have fun, with relatively narrow tyres and enough creature comforts not wish I had a VIOS.

After all, THAT's driving.

I'm hoping that 2008 engine of the year will be a VW AG produced flat-four which they may use for a new VW Beetle rear engine rear wheel drive. If that car is sexy enough like a mini-911, priced at S$85K (I'd pay S$100K for aluminium chassis), I'll get it, strip the car totally and go have fun.

End the horsepower wars - it's taking valuable engineering resources from R&D of lightweight materials for lighter cars. The answer to all our fuel economy woes is NOT diesel, it's light weight.

Re: N54 Named Engine Of The Year

speaking of lightweight, how come carbon fibre still so costly.
