My engine start to stall when Aircon is OFF. what is happening

Hi drivers, need advice. I am facing a situation of my car engine stalling. So far it stalled when i am driving at low speed or maybe change of speed as from stationary to a gradual increase of speed e.g doing U-turn.

However after reading NOS problem at http://www.bmw-sg.com/forums/help-whats-happening-my-bmw/39524-e90-engine-stalled.html i decided to record the problem by driving my car at an isolated car park.

I am surprised to find that the engine stalled only in the following condition

1) i am driving at LOW speed when the aircon is switch off and doing a change of speed like accelerating after navigating a car park up slope. OR

2)when the car is at "Park" then i ram the acceleration pedal the engine will stall yes also with Aircon OFF.

In both situation the the meter that show L/10m or 10000m at the dashboard. (sorry i don know what is this meter known as) start to fluctuate between 0-30.. anything that is ZERO will give it a chance to stall. and another bigger meter that show the zero to 6. the needle will be pointed at 0.5

However the funny situation is when i switch on the aircon esp at Full blast.. Yes very noisy number 4 full blast. the car will not stall. The L/10 meter (smaller reading) will show fluctuate 15-30 and the other bigger reading will stipulate at around 0.75.

What is happening? fuel pump? spark plug. I don think its battery as i got it replace 2 days ago.

bro, i think 0-30 refers to the fuel consumption (L/100km)
0-6000 is the rpm

from what you described, think your rpm at 0.5 or 500 is very low
guess it should hover around 650-700 in idle

my problem only happened twice to my E90 after I reached my house carpark.. reverse into lot then stalled.

Pushing start button is fine
High rev at idle, then the rpm returns back to 600+

If I start the engine from cold, and do a 3 point turn, the engine becomes hungry for more acceleration

btw.. what's your ride? E46?

1. it could be due to MAF sensor need cleaning
2. Bad tune
3.Clogged injectors
4. Low idle setting

try this, off aircon, full lock steering wheel to one direction, step on aceleration slightly..it shd stall immediately.

Is your car diesel engine??? Your rpm redline at 4800 rpm.

not diesel lah. the pic if from google...

will try this

Hi, your issue resolved? have you found the cause for it? seems like i am seeing the same symptoms ....

Just to add it might be a bad o2 sensir though most time a bad o2 sensor makes yr rpm go up not down, but get it checked, shouldnt be too expensive to fix.. Im also going to get my fluctuating idle rpm checked on next svcing

Hi All,

i just encounter this prob yesterday, parked the car , switched off the Aircon...and suddenly the car jerked and engine stalled...wierd...tried a few more time and stalled 2 times when A/C was switched off....any solution.....

Actually, it could be due to the battery. Not the battery itself, but the battery change. When they unplug the battery for the change, the car's ECU/PCM is reset. Now the car has to re-learn many engine parameters, including the idle rpms, air-fuel ratio, timings etc. Just continue to drive it carefully and it should be ok after a while.

Hi All,

managed to resolve this issue with my E90...apparently is was the Valve seperator according to the workshop....it was under Khang (TWM) warranty and hence all parts and labour is covered.
Just thought of sharing.

My 318 had the actual same problem until I changed the Air-Flow-Sensor.
