My COP Project

Me finally started my Coil On Plug (COP) project. The aim is to remove the need for spark plug cables and also save a bit of weight.

Me bought these set of coils over at ebay for USD40. They originate from a M52 motor. Below is another COP project on M42club.

just wondering for my own knowledge, what's the benefits of such a modification?
The main thing is dont have to wory about spark plug wires anymore. Me felt heart pain after spending $150 for a new set of plug wires. I have to change because my cylinder No.2 is having some mis-firing problems and rough idle. It turns out that the plug boot has worn out, thus it can't make good contact with the spark plug, causing lots of arcing.

AFAIK, plug wires do get worn out over time causing misfiring and loss of power. There is one article regarding grassroots motorsport tuning up an old E30 318IS. They replace the spark plug cables with magnecor ones and got 6HP instantly. The only explaination is their curent cables are worn out, resulting in the lost. Btw, there aren't any signs that their cables are worn out. Its working perfectly alright and not misfiring or anything.

Re: My COP Project

is this something similar to the product called plasma direct?

Re: My COP Project

Coil over plugs started in the late 90's with engines. The idea was to eliminate High Tension Cables altogether as these were causing losses and also did not meet RF emissions. The BMW separate coil and plug arrangement that you have was an inbetween step that most other manufacturers did away with. Most of them moved from the distributor system (which was very lossy) to either a wasted spark or direct coil over plug system.

IMHO, a separate coil for each plugs is actually ideal for a performance engine. You can use seprate ignition systems and coils to give tremendous spark energy. Take for example a Capacitor Discharge Ignition (CDI) system coupled to a Sports coil like a Mallory or Bosch GT40RT coil. The max high voltage output will be in the region of 60+KV. With spark ionisation voltages hovering around the 8-10KV region, the spark duration and intensity will be many times better than whatever stock coils can muster. The ultimate ignition system will see a CDI being triggered by the ECU, The CDI output will feed a high energy coil and this energy will be transferred via metal wire based HT cables which lead to the plugs.

Best of luck with the conversion.

Cheers

Re: My COP Project

i got 4 capacitors from R2D that was installed, is it the same? i install becos meeting PHIL drink kopi forget to ask boss wat is it for... muhahahahaha..................

Re: My COP Project

interesting...wonder how this can be done on the dinosaur M40 engine...the spark plugs are damn hard to reach

Can it be done to a M43 engine? this sounds interesting
I have no idea about the M43 though. Is the engine layout similar to the M42? If so, then the COp should work on M43 as well.
