Moulding bodykit to body

Hi there,

I've been trying to search on here but cant seem to find much on this. Wanted to seek inputs and recommendations on shops that provide moulding services. I am purchasing an E90 M-Tech trunk spoiler and am considering moulding the spoiler to the trunk so that it's incorporated and appears as a single piece.

Are there downfalls to doing this, other then the fact that the moulding service will cost more then the spoiler itself? :p

Is there a risk of cracking or uneven surfaces etc?

Inputs and recommendations would be greatly appreciated. cheers!

Re: Moulding bodykit to body

I would believe fiberglass is needed to fill in the gap. Prone to cracking though. Not sure if boot area is subjected to vibrations that might lead to cracking

Re: Moulding bodykit to body

Thanks for your input bodvista. That's my thoughts and concerns as well. But i cant foresee is when will the trunk be subjected to vibrations, which is why i think it might work.

But i will eventually have my sound system installed and i guess the trunk may eventually be subjected to vibrations with the addition of the sub in the trunk :p

Anyone else with direct experience willing to share? Or other inputs? :)

Re: Moulding bodykit to body

just change the whole boot to a csl style boot bro....no worries abt anything falling off then

Re: Moulding bodykit to body

Haha..I know what you mean Steven, but i was hoping to go with something more unique than the usual CSL trunk replacement. I actually really like the M-Tech trunk spoiler and think it would look great if it could be moulded to the existing trunk. Plus, it'll be one of a kind ;)

Re: Moulding bodykit to body

to achieve one piece look, nothing beats the CSL trunk :)
make sure the fitment is 100% and the curve is sweet

Thanks for the link wt_know. It does look like a nice piece but as i said earlier, i'm afraid i'm not looking for the CSL trunk look :)

So no one on the board has had any experience moulding bodykits to the body of the car? Is it really that bad an idea? :p

Its not bad an idea just that in Singapore, its very difficult to find someone with the appropriate skills and quality of materials used to create a nice smooth finish plus reliable (No cracking or "sinking") after a period of time of usage.

Hmmm...so no one has had any prior experience doing this eh?

You guys think i'd get honest answers if i start asking paint shops about this? Any recommendations would be appreciated too.

cheers!

Re: Moulding bodykit to body

I know a black 5 series that got a widebody kit done. He said it was done at balesteir and I cant remember the shop name as it was a while back. its a black 5 series with widebody and lot of chrome lining...maybe some here knows.

Re: Moulding bodykit to body

It can be done, provided you have the time and willing to spend a little more than usual.

May be you will have to get someone specialize in FRP to finish off the lamination work first, sand down to perfection. Then get another party to do spray painting work.

I can advice you on the types of material used if you are really interested, the material selection have to be able to take our weather environment.

Cheers...
