metallic tapping / ticking on N5x engines

Seems this problem affects the N51, N52 or N52K engines. Theres a tapping or rattling noise from thte engine, and the tapping speed matches the revs ie: higher rpm, the tapping gets faster. there are 38 pages in the bimmerpost forum regarding this.

tends to happen on cold starts, starts going away after driving for a while. but that can't be good, with your engine running with a sound that seems to indicate your lifters aren't getting enough oil flow.

anybody here encounter this?

Re: metallic tapping / ticking on N5x engines

hi,

i am currently driving a e65 730i.

there is no tapping or ticking sounds but there is a intermittent whining noise from the engine which varies with engine revs. my SA said this is due to transmission??

any bros care to enlighten?

also, when i release the accelerator, there is a soft clunk noise from the back. SA said it is due to the shaft.

sorry for the off topic post but i cant seem to post a new thread....

thanks!!!!!

Bro, when you accelerate, do you also hear the sound, If that is the case, It is definately the shaft. Cheers.

don't think so. alot of reports from other owners that engine oil doesn't solve/cause it.

seems its the basic design of it. i'm surprised so few ppl in SG encounter this. US forum is swamped with complaints dating back to 2006.

Re: metallic tapping / ticking on N5x engines

I have an E60 525 (with the N52 engine I think, the one that replaced the M engine?) and on idle I can hear a tapping sound coming from the engine when idle and bonnet up.

It doesn't sound too good and will get it checked out next service.

My oil continues to need topping up too - every 7,000 to 8,000 kms. 1 litre each time.

and go away after the car is driven a couple of clicks and warms up?

If you are interested, PM me and I will try to resolve your issue ok. Am quite sure it is due to the engine oil. Cheers.
