METAL5 Engine Oil Addictive

Re: METAL5 Engine Oil Addictive

all good synthethic engine oils already have friction modifiers... so most of these "additives" are really snake oil imo..

Hi BMW bro. Need ur expert opinion on the metal5 addictive from http://www.mycas.com.sg/special.html

is it dangerous for BMW engine? any opinion? Any one use it before?

If I were you, I would do an oil change ASAP.
It is better to spend money on oil change for the peace of mind.

Extract from my E90 manual, so check your E65's manual too:
"Do not use any oil additives, as they could lead to engine damage under some circumstances"

Even BMW cover their own arse with regards to additives. So if something happen, they can point to page xxx, and say "see I told you so".

Metal 5 is absolutely not dangerous for any engines ... it runs even in 5 and 7 series in Singapore ... for already few years without any problems !

Another famous German Brand even recommends it in Europe ... !

Check on Coditen Pte Ltd ... and follow the advice of the Swiss manufacturer ... my cousin uses it in his 525 which is now over 400,000kms !

Cheers

Re: METAL5 Engine Oil Addictive

I have just read abt the product and yes I believe it will work. Its just another product which coat a thin layer of metal onto the cylinder walls and piston rings etc. Such products have been around in the market for ages and they do work well to reduce friction.

Although the website did not mentioned what metal was coated, I believe its either molybdenum or zinc dialkyldithiophosphate or other compounds that has similar properties. These compounds are known to adhere to metal surfaces to cover up the tiny pits caused by wear as well as smoothening the surface.

Some engine oils already contain such additives so it may not be necessary to add it in.

Re: METAL5 Engine Oil Addictive

I think molybdenum and zinc complexes are know to be exceptionally good for steel. It would likely to work on some other hard alloy but I have yet read any articles on the magnesium alloy block which the new bimmer engine has.

Any metallurgist expert care to clarify? most obliged.

This product is made since 1982 ... in my business center a colleague runs it also on his 525 ... saving 8 to 12% petrol he said ... as he drives to Malaysia often, his car is over 160,000kms !

I read an article with same results in wheels asia ... i guess the difference is this is not an oil thickener ... I also read a few very positive testimony from the "star" brand owners.

After all ... this is Swiss !!!

Cheers

I am not exactly sure abt magnesium alloy but I think it will work as well. This is because the MSO2 (molybdenum disulphate) particles adhere themselves to the metal surface like a coating. Its also used in plastics as well as bullets (mainly copper).

User testimony is unfortunately not the best way to gauge how effective a product is. Numerous brands of oil additives uses such ways to market their product even though they do not work.

The best way to know is check out tests done by reputable labs/agencies eg. FTC in USA. Brands like Slick50, MotorUP have been found to provide no protection for engines and law suits were filed against them for false advertising.

Well i know some users in Singapore who would tell you a lot worse on these products ... and you are very kind !

The problem is here in Asia there are a lot of products which have created BMW reaction against additives ... it is not only a matter of being unefficient but also being dangerous.

The first criteria to make sure the product is reliable is to make sure it is on the retail market in Europe ... if not ... it means these "low cost but big margin" products are now made in China or around. In Indonesia where i travel a bit, you can see German technology ... but products are anything but German ... some German products are also disappearing from Europe to come in Asia where there is no consumer protection.

However to be back on Metal 5 it is for sure for sale in Europe, even in Carrefour but closer to S$100 !

Cheers
