Malaysian Cars in Singapore - Fees & Taxes?

Hi all

I am helping my KL-based brother to do some mods to his Malaysian registered Merc CLK with a workshop in Singapore. He will be driving in his car into Singapore and then leaving it with me to arrange for the workshop to start and complete the mods.

The total time that the car could be in Singapore is approx 17 to 20 days. During this period, the idea is for me to drive his car pre & post modding so that I can help to "run-in" the mods and test for reliability post modding. I may also need to deliver his car to him in KL by driving the car out of Singapore and therefore pass the Singapore immigration checkpoint.

The questions are:

1. How much fees or taxes (not sure what is the correct description here) will need to be paid for the duration of time that the car is in Singapore?

I understand that each Malaysian-registered car is allowed a free stay for a certain max number of days before a daily fee becomes payable. This is to discourage Singaporeans and Singapore PRs from buying several Malaysian-registered cars and driving them here.

2. Can I, as a Singapore PR, drive a Malaysian-registered car in Singapore? Will I be allowed to take the car through the Singapore immigration checkpoint?

I would appreciate it if answers can be provided. Cheers.

DJ, what I do know is the import tax levied by the Malaysian front if you carry parts across. Your brother might have to leave the stock parts here, depending on what mods you are undertaking. Few years back, I sold my M68 rims to fellow forumer Shedden, and he was taxed while transporting the rims back. Get your workshop to issue a receipt on "salvage parts" with a minimal residual value, like S$50. Just take note of that.

That's good advice. Thanks. I'll get the workshop to issue such a receipt. Alternatively, I can bring in his stock parts in instalments when I visit him in KL(although there shouldn't be anything too bulky).

There's no max no. of days. But do note that strictly speaking, "citizens/PRs/SG residents are not allowed to keep/use a foreign car in SG".

If you dunt get caught by a TP on the roads, shd be ok. But not so sure when you cross the checkpoint, whether it will be flagged though... :|

Thanks. I think I'd better not drive my brother's car pass the checkpoint.

Shoot! this means that I won't have the chance to take the car on a high speed drive on the NS to test how much bhp and torque improvement the mod gives during this period.

Singapore citizens, permanent residents (regardless of their place of residence), student pass holders and residents of Singapore are NOT allowed to use or keep their foreign-registered cars and motorcycles in Singapore.

Any employment pass and work permit holder, who is neither a permanent resident nor a resident of Singapore, may drive his/ her foreign-registered car and motorcycle in Singapore only if these conditions are met:
a)
he is the registered owner of the vehicle
b)
he does not have a permanent residential address in Singapore and returns to his country of origin on a daily basis
c)
the vehicle is kept or used outside Singapore for a total period of 6 hours or more everyday
d)
he has a valid insurance certificate for the use of the vehicle on Singapore roads
e)
the vehicle has an AutoPass Card to validate its entry/exit at Singapore checkpoints and for payment of Vehicle Entry Permit/Toll charges
