I've done this mod on my ride. The M3 mirror was bought 2nd hand from a fellow forummer.
If your ride is not pre-wired for the autodim mirror, then you'll need to follow the steps in this post

Good luck.

Thanks. Is your a M3 mirror? From the picture, it does not look the same as the oval one I am getting. Btw, can you tell me how much should I be paying for the mirror and installation? PM me. Do you feel that this mod is worth it? Thanks.

Its not an oval M3 mirror but the electrochromatic mirrors function the same way.
Its a nice mod to do as its more functional than aesthetics. No regrets so far.

I can't remember the exact price but here is a ballpark figure
- Installation was around $100
- Mirror (2nd hand) ~ $300

Great! Once I get the mirror, I will look up LD Auto Supplies. Anyway it is quite convinent for me as they are near my place. Hope they still remebers how to install. :)

Re: M3 Auto Dimming Rear View Mirror

I think PML does not bring the electric rear blinds in anymore. So your best bet is to get them 2nd hand.

Sent you a PM.

Re: M3 Auto Dimming Rear View Mirror

A few of the bros here have been telling me that they are intereseted to do this mod as well. So for the benefit of those who are thinking of doing this, I have confrimed with PML that all E46 sold by them are not pre-wired for auto dimming. So the wiring procedure discribed by NightHawk is compulsory. Hope some of you join me soon!

Hi cgoh,
I was just wondering if the M3 rear view mirror you ordered is the oval one? If yes, may I know how you got it for?

Yes, it is the oval one. I got it from ebay.

Re: M3 Auto Dimming Rear View Mirror

One point to note. The M3 mirror comes with a proprietory connector.
Most shops will NOT carry the corresponding male/female connector. Thus before you do the mod, do source for a mating connector from Eng Soon or Sim Lim Tower. Else you'll need to cut the connector & solder it directly.

To dismantle the mirror, just twist it (can't remember if its clockwise or anti clockwise). There will be a metal piece that is glued onto the glass that holds the mirror. Do check if the M3 mirror will fit into the same socket.

I believe it mentioned in my other post. To check if the autodim mirror works after you've installed it, cover the sensor at the front of the mirror (i.e. facing the front of the car. This is to simulate a dark environment) and shine a bright light into the back sensor to simulate bright headlights from the car behind. So bring your torchlight along.

Good luck

I thought the connectors are the same. I notice that the guys on E46fanantics said that it is plug and play (THE OFFICIAL: How to fit OEM M3 Parts on a Non-M Thread.. - E46Fanatics scroll down to the middle of the thread). I will call PML to check. Anyway the mirror is arriving tomorrow.:cloud9:

Once fixed, I will let you know. Thanks.

Re: M3 Auto Dimming Rear View Mirror

Dear all, I am glad to announced that I have successfully completed this mod. NightHawk, please ignore all my PM to you.

At first I had lots of problems. First, the mirror did not dim. Then I found out that the senors on the mirror was dirty. After I clean them, work like a charm! Then I had problem connecting Pin 1. My car already had pin 1 pre wired (but do not know) and still connect in to the reverse gear source. This caused my reverse lights to come on even when I am not on reverse. So I disconnected it and just put to reverse gear to see if auto dimming will disable. Of course it works since it was pre wired!

I am very happy tonight although it took me a long time to figure it out. LD Auto still do not know that the mirror is working when I left them. I only fixed all my problems when I got home so they are also very dissappointed. I have to call them tomorrow to tell them the good news.
