Lowering E60

I have plans to lower my ride. Anyone can advise on changing the spring or the coilover?

Hey bro,

I am going to do it too.

According to what I have collected so far... if you are looking for a comfy ride and you are not looking at adjusting heights after installing, then go for springs... It can lower your ride 30mm from your stock level according to the boss of BVO and a lot cheaper. Your stock suspension can be use for another 2 years if you change to new springs so that's another saving... also according to BVO's boss. Estimate cost for springs n workmanship should be just under $500. I will be doing it next month when most of my projects on hand has cleared for the year. The whole process for E60 should take less than half a day.

As for Coilovers.... you can adjust heights after installing and there are quite a few brands with different specs to choose from. You can go as low as your coilover permits. i have seen some rides so low... it looks as if it would not clear the slightest blimp. Of course, you have to prepare for a rougher ride as the shocks are much stiffer than springs...althought the stiffness can be adjusted too. But even the softest level is still much stiffer. And vibration is aplenty if your ride is going at lower speeds. I tried my friend's type R... definetely not something you look for if you want comfy rides. Finally you are looking at prices of ard $2500 up to nearly $4000... depending on brands and models.....of course I am talking abt brand new lah.

So, there you go... a briefs to springs and coilovers. If you need more technical details.... my 2 cents worth is still insufficient. But I am sure other sis n bros will contribute their inputs soon. Or you can pay a visit to a few workshops for an insight. So far I have been to BVO only....and the boss Bernard sounds reasonable.

Cheers

Re: Lowering E60

Dude

For ecstatic purpose, sure you can opt for springs.

I had coils set-up on my 5ser as well, 'stiffness' never came into play as its weight distribution/mass are there. Dad driving it most of the time.

Unlike my Z4, I could feel the harshness initially but after adjusting the settings of the coils, no more issues.

If comparing with Jap marque, I'm running Tein coils on my wife's Swift . Besides alil' spirited driving at times, she enjoys every moment of the normal day-to-day driving.

Budget vs ecstatic vs road handling/performance, advices/theories can be given but at the end of the day, you gotta know what you want.

Workshops wise, besides Bernard/Ah Wee of BVO, you can look for Andre/Chris/Daniel of BOSS, Amos/Seeto of J4C, Kenny of Tropical Success. Do a search for their addys.

Good luck

Hi AC Boy, thanks for the good info. I have a 5er as well, and thinking to change to coilovers, but hesistating cos worried of the stiffness. What coilovers are you using? BVO showed me a 'cheap' coilover brand is Ruff, anyone know whether they are ok? I don't track and lowering is mainly for aesthetics as well.

Re: Lowering E60

Are we able to lower the car a little bit, and maintains the comfort, and has some improvement (less roll) at the corner?

Re: Lowering E60

Hi Dav_C,

Probably for look wise....go for lowering spring then install H&R anti-roll bar to improve your cornering (less roll)........

If budget allows then go with coilover, KW v2 will be good enough as you can adjust height and comfort level............

happy searching then.......

cheers

Bro,

As mentioned in my earlier post... aesthetics without tracking..... just go for springs.... spend the savings from coil to get other aesthetic grooming.

If you have to have coilover and can live with the stiffness.... I think Bro AC323's suggestion of KW version 2 is good at ard $2500 - 2800. Ver 3 is abt $3500

Bro, AFAIK, strut bar is mounted in engine compartment, ARBs are mounted below the car. Search J4C folders, they have a thread selling these some time back.

Ahhh,

So its the cross bars lah. Too many names liao:lol2: :lol2: :lol2:

So how bro, springs? I will be doing them next mth end as no time now lah..... have to leave car at workshop for half a day... inconvenient now as got quite a number of projects up till end Sept.

Let me know lah becos got another 2 bros want to do springs also neXt mth.

Actually also got a few other simple mods I want to do leh.... like changing to light weight pulley like bro AC323 suggested to gain back power taken away by aircon and I.C.E. Also thinking of changing air-scoupe. Another one is to add Aluminium Pedals to my 2 pedals n foot rest.

Re: Lowering E60

I don't suggest lower springs for E60s.....most of the aftermarket lowering springs drops the front too much....

eg. Front 0.5 finger gap & rear 1.2 finger gap.

It should be the other way round.....

Then right side still sits lower than left side.....

KW V2 Street Comfort is much more comfortable than KW V2.

Those who wants control & yet a more comfy ride can consider the V2 Street Comfort Coilovers for E60s...

Can adjust height & damping.

Re: Lowering E60

I wanted total control over the ride height and exactly how it rides. So coilovers a clear choice for me.

At this height (can't go any lower!) the ride was stiff, but I would say that its still decent enough for me to use the car for business purposes. I just wanted to ride the lowest possible and see if i could live with it. And found that its not a problem.

My setting is 5 clicks (or 50%) for a Bilstein PSS9.

KW v2.......

MTL.............

Re: Lowering E60

Been slamming for a few months liao, and seriously the ride ain't a go kart leh. I do pick up business visitors, colleagues in the car and I didn't have a complain about the ride. Obviously at this height - don't go flooring your throttle over the high humps lah. I would be leaving my bumper behind. :p

Re: Lowering E60

Bumpz for your ride bro,

Awesome height you have achieve there........but without feeling rough or bumpy or too much vibration? Wat abt the stiffness.... do you feel veri rigid or hard?

If so, I may start to change my mind and consider paying some extra dues for the coilover man.

Hi iceman,

your set-up: front half finger? rear 1 finger?

cheers

Looks like front no finger & rear -1 finger gap!!

I'm only running front 0.5 finger & rear -1 finger gap.....

Re: Lowering E60

Er.. front 1/4 or zero finger. Rear - 1/2 finger. Kinda hard to tell coz of curvature of the tyres. The front looks impossibly low - i.e. how can the wheels turn full lock? But due to the beauty of the geometry, your front height automatically increases height to clear it once you turn steering. Probably due to the caster angle.

If going for aggressive offset - then only ppl like Ah Lye can roll fender to suit, no need spray painting kind of deal. For rear only. Front will not usually kena.
