Low engine oil

Has anyone encountered this before? The engine oil level was 3/4 & 1/2 the very next day. No dip stick in the engine bay therefore have to depend on on-board computer. Went to PML service centre, was told that it's normal, need not top up. Current milage at below 8K only. Please help.

Re: Low engine oil

Try checking the oil level in the morning say after driving your car for 15 minutes when the oil has been properly warmed up. Check again at about the same time and after same 15 minutes' drive. Cheers!

Re: Low engine oil

Thank you for the advise. I've been motoring for weeks, different time of the day. Result is constant. Only concern is if there's a need to top-up or still safe to drive (as per advised by service consultant).

Re: Low engine oil

Hi,

I had the same problem and when I made some more noise at PML and telling them that there are signs and indications of leakages, the did more work and found out that the sensor was faulty.... here's how I check, mind my terms as i am not really familiar with the terms of the car.

when you open up your engine bay, you will notice at your left side, facing the car and nearer to the wiper fluid top up area, there are 2 silver-polished bolts that are holding the engine and a plate (silver colour). See there is marking and if there is, look futher below and should you see some oil stains, that means the oil is leaking slowly.

if your car is still under warranty, get them to check your sensor and also make them drain out all your oil and measure how much is there being collected (for full, it should be about 4.2 litres-according to the mechanic)

regards,

spiderman

Re: Low engine oil

I wouldn't top up unless the message comes up. If by any chance you end up putting in more oil the gaskets will leak to excessive oil pressure and possibly led to engine damage. BMW engines consume some oil over course of time and 8K mileage seems about ok for this kind of level. I wouldn't worry; if the sensor was faulty it will give different readings all the time. rememeber reading can vary a bit wehn driving on curves or taking fast turns. it will tend to normailize after a while. Like someone suggested check in hte morning after about 15mins of driving and it should tell oyu pretty much the oil level. You may do more harm than good if you top up un-necessrily, especially since there is no dip stick now to verify physically the oil levels.

Re: Low engine oil

happened to me before, just top up and it will be fine

Re: Low engine oil

PML advised me that the engine oil indicator is for ascertaining whether the oil level is 'ok' or 'low' and not the actual level of oil in the engine. As long as the indicator says 'OK', there is no need to top up oil, regardless of whether the indicator is at 1/4, 1/2 or 3/4

Re: Low engine oil

i think there's a page in the user manual saying that if indicator show Min, car cannot travel more than 200km to prevent further damage. check your manual.

Re: Low engine oil

Also the indicator will indicate the amount of oil to be topped up e.g +1L, means add one litre of engine oil

Re: Low engine oil

Wow, tell me about the car being intelligent. All dependent on the on-board computer. I'm still living in the era of dip-stick. Thanks for all the advise.
