Light Tyres

Hi Bros,

Does anyone knows if there is any weight difference between different tyre brands? If there is, is it significant enough to improve acceleration if you use the lightest ones? And what are the lightest set of tyres we can get? Thanks.

Re: Light Tyres

you can go to tirerack.com to compare brand and size of tyres that you wish to get

Re: Light Tyres

Lighest tyres are those that are worn away, my neighbour say one >> less rubber less weight.

But frankly for road use I ve come to the point where I think the weight isnt that great an issue lah. Unless one day u intend to race side by side with Hamilton. I think good grip rubber compound is more important.

Re: Light Tyres

is 2kg reduction per wheel (rim & tyre) is considered significant benefit for day-to-day drive on sg roads ? not fighting pole position with hamilton yeah ...
if not can save that $5K+ for other use ...

Re: Light Tyres

Leean, you have to state your tyre size - diameter and width. Weight is an issue, but not as paramount as to ignore the wet/dry grip and wear rate.......

Re: Light Tyres

2kg/ tyre quite significant leh bro

If slower acceleration is your concern after rim/tyre upsize to sAY 19 INCH, then u should try not to use too wide a tyre. I notice every 1 cm wider tyre slows u down. We have a tendency to go with 245/275 for eg without understanding before we buy them.

Re: Light Tyres

From stock cast alloy + RFT to lighter wheel+tyre combo, 2 kg is possible....... even with larger wheel and tyres.

Re: Light Tyres

Yes, weight does matter...

Learnt something about rotational mass, the further away from the hub, the more difficult to move it... I am no expert in the physics.. maybe someone can further explain..

I have tried Falken 452 and F1 Asymmetrics on same 17" rims. The drive is totally different in terms of pick up and fuel consumption. Did a weight check, it was like 1plus to 2kg per corner. The F1 Asym is lighter.

Michelin PS2 has the lightest weight.

Like wt_know mentioned, check out the tirerack.. they show all the tyre specs in details..

Re: Light Tyres

Hi Bros,

Thanks for your swift reply. I am on 225/40/18 front and 245/35/18 rear. Guess PS2 is the lightest at 21 Ibs.

Re: Light Tyres

Are you are on stock or light rims??

They do make a lot of difference too.

Re: Light Tyres

Michelin n Conti are the two lightest in the market...
