So you've got yourself a new 335i with DCT.... You've reached the 2000km run-in period and you've discovered in the manual that your car has been blessed with LAUNCH CONTROL!
Now find yourself a safe stretch of road where such driving is legal
and get ready to be thrown back into your seat......or maybe not.
Launch control as I understand it in the GTR sense is the computers way of getting you from 0 to 100 in the quickest way possible, managing in particular torque to the wheels therefore minimizing wheel spin..... Not so in the 335 with DCT!
I sat in my 335 on a safe stretch where such things are legal and went about the star trek-esq procedure of preparing for launch:
Sport mode: activated
Gear lever to sport: selected
DTC on: check
Manual gear 1 selected: check
Left foot hard on brake: ready
Accelerator hard to the floor: set
RPM holding steady at 4800
Race flag now showing on the dash indicating that all systems were ready for launch.
Stand by......road clear.... release the brake!
ahhhhhh!!!
I went nowhere.
The wheels spun themselves into a fury and I fishtailed wildly. I looked out the window half expecting a bicycle to ride past coughing from the sweet scent of rubber.
I never got to 100kmh. Well, I didn't but I'm pretty sure my wheels did.
I have to say it was quite a rush! It did put a big grin on my face. Ive never burnt so much rubber in an automatic before. I sit here thinking was that their intention? If so nice!
Maybe it was a bit uncouth to put 'rubber burning mode' in the manual so they disguised it
Can't wait to do it again!!
