key does not allow me to crank...any ideas?

Hi Guys, one of my keys to my E46 decided not to allow me to crank the engine...i can open the door, unlock via remote...turn the ignition but when i try to start the engine nothing happens...

could it be the battery on it that it is dying? does the e46 key have a imobilizer that is causing this.
and since there is a imobilizer shouldnt the valet key(starts without a problem with this key) which is in the same key ring transmit the necessary signal to for it to start?

if it is really the battery i am going to perform a disection of the key to change the batts...
whats the sequence to re-program?

Thanks guys!
Ken

Re: key does not allow me to crank...any ideas?

hahaha.... thanks! that was an easy fix....
do you know if they will keep the current key? or will they just issue new key?

since the key has gone hay wire.. might as well perform some surgery on it...

There are 2 possiblity. I suspect a flat battery on the remote cause this problem. if your car is around 4-5 years old. Refer to this link the step to DIY to replace the battery and program it
replacing battery in key fob.... - E46Fanatics
Cost less then 10 buck to solve the problem rather then go to PML to buy a new key. They also will get a new un program key and program it and sell you at few hundred buck. And last if after replaced the battery can't solve the problem 100% sure you have a faulty starter motor. The new startor motor from eng soon cost around 500 buck. labour will cost another 200 buck to replace at workshop.

Thanks!! yah will try that first... starter motor should be fine cause the other key works.
most likely chip kaput or battery flat.
maybe its the valet key interfering? i will try taking out of the keyring and see...

Re: key does not allow me to crank...any ideas?

Well finally had a chance to open the key fob, tested the batts in it, 3+ volts so battery is not dead.
i guess its the immobiliser.

PML charge how much for a new key?
$300?

I can survive on 1 key and the valet key but if the second key dies also then i have had it..haha..

wonder how the immobilizer works? anyway another sign that its the immobiliser is that when i insert the key with the door open, the car does not beep. its like as if the key is not inserted.
Strange...

Re: key does not allow me to crank...any ideas?

Same thing just happened to one of my keys.

Sigh ... don't think its the battery, coz the Unlock/Lock/Eject boot function works.

Have you got a new key yet? How much for it?

Re: key does not allow me to crank...any ideas?

sorry to hear of the same problem... have not gone down to our dear friend Performance motor.
