Intercooler for 335i

Dear bros & senior members,

I am thinking of installing intercooler for my E93.

Understand from reading intercooler aids in cooling the turbo and thus when the turbo is operating at lower temperature, this translate to better power - comes in handy especially during city style driving.

I am seeking advise from bro/senior members here who had installed intercooler in their 335i and would be grateful if any can share with me their experiences after installing the intercooler.

BTW, is there a stock intercooler in the 335?

Thank you for any advise.

Re: Intercooler for 335i

there is a stock intercooler in the 335.

no need for aftermarket replacement for "city style" driving.

money better spent on some other mods like a juicebox or procede tune if loooking for more horses.

Re: Intercooler for 335i

You've got two considerations in the FMIC upgrade:

(1) space constraints in the engine bay - the largest aftermarket FMIC I have seen here is the one from Active Autowerke, which required trimmings on the inside of the front bumper. The rest could fit the space, but core size becomes an issue. Many brands like AMS, Evo Raceworks and Agency Power looks small in the core on first visual as compared to Stett and RPi. Very hard to tell unless we compare real stock, which is hard to come by.

(2) cooling efficiency - for any aftermarket FMIC to work, the charged air must be sufficiently cooled more so than the stock intercooler, which, in the N54 (and perhaps the N55) case, appears to be less effective than thought. The engine bay is way too hot, especially when it frequently show signs of heatsoak after spirited drives or 1 to 2 laps on the track ....... Perhaps a measurement of temperature differences of air passing through the FMIC between stock and aftermarket FMICs will be a better assessment of how efficient this mod really is.

Re: Intercooler for 335i

Thank you to all who had kindly responded to my query.

I have the JB3 installed in my 335i. Since there is a stock intercooler, I saved the money for other enhancement.

The engine bay in E93 is running fairly hot. My engine temp revolves around 110 - 115 dec C - City Driving. I learnt that modifications can be done to a certain valve and after doing so, the engine bay temp will read between 85 - 95 deg C - city drving which sounds really good to me.

I am tempted to go for this simple mod. Just wonder if any N54 members here have carried out this mod on their ride?

Thanks in advance for any advise. Cheers

I agree that the N54 engine bay runs rather hot in our stop-start traffic condition. Not sure if the BMW performance kit would help.

The excerpts from the website:

"BMW Performance power kit*
The BMW Performance power kit for the BMW 335i and BMW 135i further enhances your vehicle's already impressive engine output. The key to its effectiveness is the way that all the components have been designed to work together. The modified engine tuning parameters mean the engine generates higher temperatures – and so an additional radiator and air intakes, and a powerful 850-watt fan have been incorporated to deal with this extra heat. The effect that these modifications have can be seen in the graph. The maximum torque of the in-line six-cylinder engine is increased from 400 to as much as 450 Newton-metres, depending on the type of transmission, and power output rises from 225 to 240 kW. This improves acceleration both from 0 to 100 km/h (by 0.2 seconds over models without the power kit) and from 80 to 120 km/h (by 0.5 seconds in fifth gear)."

Most of us have changed our oil coolers, and it did not help that much. Oil temp better contained below 115 on hard driving, but on track, same heating issue. 120 degrees cannot be contained at all.

I wonder what mods can lower the oil temp to 85-95 degrees? A second oil cooler? Contemplated before, but execution not easy...... The fan might help, but definitely not 85-95 degrees...........

Re: Intercooler for 335i

Hi,

Typo error - meant to say modification to a certain valve and not "...value...".

I learnt from a mechanic that claimed with the said modification, can bring the engine temp down to 85 - 95 deg C during city driving. He claimed he had performed on two N54 engine.

Maybe I try and go for this "valve" modification and keep all posted thereafter.

Re: Intercooler for 335i

I believe your mechanic is refering to the water pump valve that open after certain temp is reached...

I don't it is possible le even though u change the termostat to non-turbo car version. On E39, my normal water temp is around 100 deg. I asked whether it is possible to lower the temp. But lower temp means lower water pressure. It might screw up some default setup.

Re: Intercooler for 335i

Dont mod intercooler lah, wait warranty void. Stay stock is the best. Change FMIC wait add weight to the front most of the car>>>upset 50/50 weight distribution.

Hi,

Thank you again to all whom had taken time to read and kindly reply to my query.

Appreciate the valuable advise. After reading, I won't be going for the valve mod - worried upset other setup.

Cheers :)
