Easiest way would be to just change your stock speakers to either co axial or components and put in a 4 channel amp to drive the speakers.
If you dun intend to change too much, then go for those brands like Alpine, Pioneers (speakers and amps) to save some $$.

If you want to keep the current headunit, well in my humble opinion, you just need to do 2 things
1) Change stock front speakers to components - my personal favourite are Focal Utopias

Remember to get a powerful 4-ch amp to power these. You dont really need a pre-amp
2) Get a decent subwoofer with amp to power it - My personal fav would be

Kicker SX1 Class D amps

Get a sub, could be 12". Value for money ones include Xtant A series...or IDQ, and got money can try JL Audio. Get a separate amp to power it.
REcommended ICE installers in this forum includes HOng Guan, Tye... er...rest i forgot. I like Pin Liang at Zion road...abit steep but prices transparent, QC pretty good...

Wah bro...that is like using a bulls knife to kill a chicken leh....
Focal Utopia are great drivers but to put in a lightly mod setup a tad overkill....running Utopia on their passive x'over is a serious crime.....in short over kill lah.
For a stock bimmer system...just lup one simple 4 channel amp or a 2 ch amp like oneheadlight mentioned and use better quality speakers can liao.
Alpine components are not the best...but at 200+ a pair...its much better improvement over the stock paper cone speakers.
Getting a simple Alpine amp and Alpine components upgrade will set you back like 700 bucks....which that is not even enough to buy a pair of Utopias !!

Yeap a sub is a must for some decent bass, a ported one would be nice and easy.

I honestly like MB Quart...
No one has recommended it though... hehe.. but i like them..
I've got the MB Quart Discus line and the premium line and honestly, to my regular ear, both sound the same..
So probably just go for the Discus line?
And a regular amp will be fine if you're not particular.. a Steg amp?
