If you were to choose

If you have the budget for both cars. Which one will you choose.

1) E46 320 (In-6)
2) E90 320 (In-4)

Put everything into consideration.

Re: If you were to choose

I will vote for the E46 320 6cyl. A 6 cylinder is simply the most balanced engine you can buy when you have limited money. In pure technical terms, a 60degree V12 is the most balanced of all engines that requires no balancer shafts. Next to this are in line 6 cyl and 4 cyl boxer engines. The balance has to do with the moving parts in the engine (crankshaft, conrods and pistons) cancelling out themselves.

With a 4 cyl engine, the vibration effects start to come out once the 2L barrier is breached. The 4 cyl valvetronic engine has a balancer shaft that runs at twice the crankshaft speed to cancel out the vibrations.

I don't mean to be nasty but i think if you want to buy a BM, go for a 6 cyl engine. No offence to Valvetronic owners. Pls dun flame me..

Sorry, but just my opinion.... : ) I am voting from an engine point of view

Re: If you were to choose

Same scenario as the choice between E36 6-potter and E46 4-potter in 1998. On hindsight, the first generation E46 (pre-facelift, 1.9 non-valvetronic, non-steptronic) was much less desirable than the last batch of E46 in comparison. Hence the choice would be for the E36 6-potter. I am not saying history will repeat itself in this case, but tendency is the the first batch of BMW in any generation carries some problems, or will be subjected to further fine-tuning, facelift, upgrades, ......

Re: If you were to choose

In addition to the 6 cylinder logic, easier to get used mods like bodykit etc for the e46. Will be lighter on the wallet. My suggestion willl be to get a used e46 320i and drive for a couple of years. Let the bugs from the E90 be resolved first then go buy a used E90 325i. Swee swee.

Re: If you were to choose

I'm driving a 4-potter valvetronic E46 now. If I have to make my choice all over again, I'll go for the 6 in-line.

Re: If you were to choose

of course e90!
new model ,new platform! can last for another 7 years!!

Re: If you were to choose

6 cylinder E46 does give you better driving dynamics, however E90 320i is a newer model... I would choose the E46, because its lighter to the pocket... But if I can afford it, I will definately get the E90 b4 Xmas...

Re: If you were to choose

We had the same dilemma as well.

We chose in the end, the E46 because we simply loved the contemporary, timeless design of the E46. The E90 had a more ambitious, modern exterior that spelt more of avant-garde than sporty BMW. The interior of the E90 is much improved though, and I'll definitely rate it over the E46's.

But in terms of the engine, the E46 320i engine is definitely better. The E90 320i's one is kinda noisy.

Re: If you were to choose

Ya know... after driving a 4 pot Jap car for a few years, I've decided to focus primarily on cars with smooth engines and rear wheel drive set up forever. Hence the reason why I chose BMWs. Well Porsche's' are nice but out of my league at the moment.

On engine point of view... get the E46

On monetary issues (resale)... get the E90

Re: If you were to choose

If you care what your friends or family say or you a little vain like me - go for the E90. So you will not be bothered by the constant - "how come you never buy new model?"
If you drive for your own shiokness - go for the E46.
Simple.
