How to manage a puncture without Run-Flat Tyres

Need some advices. Just like many new owners, I am considering replacing the stock 16" rims+RF tyres with aftermarket rims+non RF tyres.

Now since the E90[and other models] do not have a compartment for a spare tyre, how do you guys manage driving with 4 normal tyres without a spare in yr boot? if u go to certain places such as up NS highway to Malaysia, u actually put a spare in yr boot? Even on weekends, tyre shops may not open, what will you do if u have a puncture say at 12 midnight somewhere along SLE? or in some ulu part of Singapore. Your RF is gone, yr tyre pressure zero.:(

Do we still go back to RFs. Suddenly I am beginning to realise the importance of RFs, unfortunately they cost an empire.

ABD .. im using non RF tyres as well & did think abt wat if my tyre puncture.
wat we could do is to check the tyre pressure on regular basis but i was provided with the Emergency tyre patch in case there's a puncture but hv not figure out how to use.

ADSNX,
what is this emergency tyre patch? where did u get it

i think there is one at J4C, it costs abt 120 abt there or maybe less, what it does (if i remember correctly) is that when u have a flat, it creates a silicone coating hence covering the puncture, i think this is how it works la.

Re: How to manage a puncture without Run-Flat Tyres

Just to share, i would like to offer alternatives to cars that run normal tires after changing from RFTs. There are 3 alternatives available to patch tires when heading up NS highway.

option 1: Use a portable 12V compressor to inflate tire after injecting in a sealeant compound to seal the tire. The compressor is available from J4C or TS Auto (sembawang) together with some sealant (i think 2 or 3 punctures).

Option 2: Keep a can of inflation foam in the boot. When you get a flat, just screw in the valve and depress the button.

Option 3: Buy tire patch kit from Autobaccs or some car accessories shops to patch tire immediately. Then inflate with portable compressor or bicycle tube quick inflator cartridge. The patch kit has 2 'T' shaped tools and a couple of strips of sealant media and a tube of rubber cement. For the bike quick inflate, will need about 3pcs of CO2 cartridges to fully inflate a tire.

Each of these 3 options does not give you a 100% fix for all punctures. For cuts in tire walls or holes larger than 5mm or so, usually only a spare tire can get you running again. For option 1 and 2, you will need to get to a tire shop ASAP to perform a more permernant fix. The best fix is to do an internal patching where the tire is removed from the rim and a piece of rubber is bonded to the inside of the tire.

Hope this helps

Cheers

I think tyre repair kits are OK for Singapore, even in the ulu-est parts.

But if you're driving up north, it'll be much safer to bring a full sized spare along.

Hi Beng,

I do share your concern. That's the reason why I still stick to RF at this moment even though it is hard and not so good road-holding (it seems). Actually it is not true that RF "cost an empire". I made a check with PML recently and was quoted S$300+ for Conti SC2 size 225/45/17. It sounds quite reasonable to me. I'm also contemplating to change to 18" with non-RF but still considering.

Anyone has anything to share about using RF for a period of time and then switch to non-RF, especially in terms of road-holding.
