Kinda tired with that chrome trim.......

..... it sort of break the shape of the ride.....

.... so I went down to Gen Concept (the shop that did Jack's Racing Stripes) with fellow forumer Jamie nick "red" to see what they could offer.

They came up with a solution - cover the trims with the ORACAL wraps !!!

ORACAL USA

These are not the normal "sticker" or tape - these are industrial strength wraps that could (1) withstand 80 degree Celsius heat (2) stay wrapped for 4-5 years (3) peel off without damaging the paintwork and leaving any residue.

I was running short of time. Jamie wanted the "stealth" look, so he picked the matt wrap......

Work in progress......

How it was done.......

And..... done !!! The finished product !!! You can see Jamie's smile !!!

Gen Concept better call. They do decals on 20 cars per day on average. Look for Jong 9272 7772.

Grilles painting can look for Yew Lip.

Re: How To Black-Out Chrome/Silver Window Trims?

Really no way to jus tape the chrome linear of our grill mer? even its taken out from bumper? I was really thinking of tape it myself.. but still haven't figure out how to take out the grill myself. cos I read in the E90 forum, onces the its taken out, the chrome and fin and be separated.

Re: How To Black-Out Chrome/Silver Window Trims?

Hitmee, buy a can of matt black and spray it yourself, so easy.

Achoo, there should only be 2 screws or so holding the grille in to the bonnet

Re: How To Black-Out Chrome/Silver Window Trims?

Congrats on the work by Genconcept, Kenn! Looks great!

Acupunch, u can find the DIY in E90post. Think its harder to remove though... :)

Re: How To Black-Out Chrome/Silver Window Trims?

when u remove better be careful. if the clips break, that's it!

Re: How To Black-Out Chrome/Silver Window Trims?

I hv seen them using pink color sticker and lay it over some Honda Waive's front chrome grill....Whole car is pink....

Great stuff Kenn,....u can get em to tape over your DPE Lip too if u like haha

thanks for the tips, but I think the screw u mention its jus the top piece. cos E90 grill its top straight piece and bottom half its an 'U'. E92 its a whole kidney grill like your E46.

I got it, try doing what's suggest by pulling toward me. but it doesn't come out.

yah! lo... that's why until now still I can't DIY the sticker myself. the top piece its pieces of cake but the bottom 'U' its big headache.

hmmm... maybe one of this weekend I'll visit the GURU at GENCONCEPT for advise, how else it can be done.

the reason I'm more interested in taping the grill than spray paint cos, MIKE said painting the grill will chip off or peel in long run. mainly because the chrome based on the grill.

Re: How To Black-Out Chrome/Silver Window Trims?

yes, you have to sandblast the chrome first, then it will stick

Re: How To Black-Out Chrome/Silver Window Trims?

Yup, what Phil said is true... U have to tell the shop to sand it 1st. I haven't had the need to respray the grill for the 3yrs I had my ex-car...

Re: How To Black-Out Chrome/Silver Window Trims?

hmmm... maybe spray painter jus like to play safe, warn u 1st. you accept it that it may peel or chip, than if its peels or chip, its not so much their fault. but it won't the best.

Re: How To Black-Out Chrome/Silver Window Trims?

If u choose matt, they won't spray a clearcoat over it, so the chances of it chipping is higher. But even on my matt grilles, they lasted a LONG time!

Re: How To Black-Out Chrome/Silver Window Trims?

Try using undercarriage matt paint, lasts longgggggg time.

I reckon a DIY job is easy using a spray can, same result. Use scotchbrite pad to scour the chrome, no worries.
