How much can a set of light rim improve your car's 0-100 timing

Hi Guys,

I have read so much about manufacturers claiming a set of lightweight rims can improve their car's performance and save fuel.

Assuming a 523 running on 18' original bmw rims with 0-100 of 9.0 sec timing, what kind of timing can the same car running on a set of Forged One Pc Rim like a 18" Yokohama Advan RS achieve?

Can any of you guys advise.

Test it..data will set you free. How long does it take to swap a whole wheelset... 10 minutes...

Why has it not been run and logged.. maybe because vendors don't want or couldn't care less about telling the truth.

Re: How much can a set of light rim improve your car's 0-100 timing

that would means buying it if i can't get to borrow the lightweight set for comparision

thinking of going for advan rs but price is not cheap (to me la at least)

wonder if Progressive ME or Breyton RACE GTS are considered light

Re: How much can a set of light rim improve your car's 0-100 timing

friends and vendors have all sorts of wheelsets laying about... just do a swap test..

Gd question! I always wonder. If the stock rim is 13 kg each. Gd light rim abt 9kg? So u save abt 16 kg total? Dont get me wrong. I m sure theres some diff. But does 16 kg really make so much diff to the 0-100? I think i just have to remove my golf bag from the boot or dont pump full tank.

13kg - 9kg = 4kg per wheel. it makes a lot of difference in term of spinning a 13kg wheel as oppose to a 9kg wheel. it's not about the absolute figure of 16kg reduction. in addition, lightweight wheel also improves cornering & braking.

Hi Jason,

Breyton is heavy.........................
Lighter rims of course FC will be better is like driving alone vs having 4 adults in the car ya.......
Pick-up also faster.........

if not just install the powerbox can already...............unless you go tracking.............

cheers

+1 , its the difference in momentum/inertia of a 9kg vs 13kg rim instead of purely 16kg weight saving for a 1.5T car.

Hi ac,

So breyton is heavy, any idea abt Progressive ME?

I was interested in the 18" type124 rim from 530 offered by a fellow forumer but gave
it up because i heard that they are rather heavy. As i was striving to my car's performance, i think lightweight rim is one important aspect too

cheers

Plus, you will need to add spacers for your E60 if you are using Breyton, thus add weight overall :):)

if unsprung weight is the concern, do weigh your tires too then. better still weigh it after balanced, as a set.

pump nitrogen to save weight as well :)

Re: How much can a set of light rim improve your car's 0-100 timing

forged rims + light tyres + nitrogeon = :woottt:

sounds like a good formula...

Re: How much can a set of light rim improve your car's 0-100 timing

tried in my gti. 10.5kg stock rims to 6.9kg volks.......its 0.2 seconds. appx.

Re: How much can a set of light rim improve your car's 0-100 timing

if one is not a fanatic for track and 0-100 timing, i believe the unsprung weight reduction in wheels + tyres improve day-to-day driving experience substantially and not just the 0.2s :D

Re: How much can a set of light rim improve your car's 0-100 timing

Change all the bolts to 6/4 titanium to reduce weight further down :)

My opinion is since rim is not a wear and tear item, just buy used rim (good condition ofcause) will save you a huge sum of $. You can even sell them off when you plan to change them at about the same price when you bought.

:)
